Meetups in Ottawa

Bumping this as a reminder of the event tonight. I can make it for the first hour, then I have to go swing swords. Lucky for me, it's pretty close to the dojo this time.

Thanks - I forgot to update it!

The venue is Royal Oak by Pretoria Bridge, this time.

We'll be upstairs.

Arse, I can't get to this one! Thursdays are now offlimits for me.

Ah well.

Shame as 14 people have signed up for it already, and I like meeting new people.

D'oh! I'm making my first visit to Ottawa soon, but I won't be there on August 2.

Thursday this week, Brights meetup at the Canal Royal Oak. 7pm.

A word from Mike the organiser:

Okay so there IS a big turnout. That's great. I've booked space on the inside on the top floor for about 20 people. I'd like to have the patio upstairs, but it's very busy and they don't take reservations. Heck, it could rain.

I've been collecting a few of potential topics and will chat about the latest of the 'new atheists' movement, what's happening locally and my counter to the theory that data inside a black-hole is lost.

I'll also be talking about the plan for our future events for the fall/winter and would welcome any input on books, topics and presenters. I'll be circling around the table gathering input and meeting the new members.

Mike

PS. I'll be there early for dinner as usual.

I won't be there, but Horatius will be (at least for the first part, he says). New people welcome. It's a pub, so just turn up, look out for the meetup sign and wade in. Upstairs, like the man said. And despite the title, atheism definitely optional....

New meetup for Monday Sept. 17th:

Cognitive Dissonance

When:
Monday, September 17, 2007, 7:00 PM
Where:
Arrow and Loon
99 Fifth Ave
Ottawa , ON K1S 5K4
Info/Map
Description:

Monday September 17, 2007
Topic: Cognitive Dissonance

Comments: This is the 50 year anniversary of the birth of the term Cognitive Dissonance. The term was proposed from observation of the counterintuitive belief that arose from a failed prophecy. Cognitive Dissonance is the feeling of tension in your brain when you have conflicting beliefs.

Reading: Mistakes were made (but not by me): Why we justify Foolish Beliefs, Bad Decisions, and Hurtful Acts ? Elliot Aronson

Suggested beverage: The bad decisions and mistakes lend themselves to a more youthful approach to the evening. I would suggest fuzzy navels and lemon gin and 7up. Non-alcoholic - a large 7-11 grape Slushy.

Location: Arrow and Loon - 99 Fifth Avenue

New people always welcome.

Bump reminder:
meetup tomorrow (Monday).

Hi everyone,

I've got enough space reserved at the Arrow and Loon on the tables on the terrace area of the restaurant. The terrace is in the middle of the mall next to the fountain. I'll be there about 6:30 for dinner.

BTW, if you haven't read the book, have a gander at the Wiki pages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_dissonance
for cognitive dissonance to get a sense of what Aronson and Tavris are presenting in their book.

October is Brights/Atheists presentation month. Lee Graham, a researcher studying Evolutionary Computing at Carleton University I.C.E, gave a presentation at the Amazing Meeting 5 in Vegas last winter.

Lee's topic: Digital Darwinian Evolution Produces Irreducible Complexity.

This work is based on the Irreducible Complexity Evolver web applet at http://www.stellaralchemy.com/ice/

It looks like a fascinating talk.

Any and all welcome to attend!
