Farmer Duane Anderson said the bugs are at times so thick that he could kill 10 crickets with a single step on his 3,200-acre spread in Dog Valley about 100 miles south of Salt Lake City.

Officials in Utah, Idaho and Nevada say this year's infestation may be the worst in recent history. "

Wasn't this also in the Old Testament about the time of Moses & Egypt?
Should I be worried? Is this a 'natural' thingy? Should I move my IRA out of bonds and back into equities? Why don't the cats eat the crickets instead of the song birds? Not enough birds - having been eaten by cats - so there's no control? Eh? And why are they called "Mormon crickets"? Why not Roman Catholic crickets or Baptist crickets? Even Unitarian crickets so as not to offend anybody? Eh?
This is the beginning of the 'end times'.

Well, that depends on a number of things:

How much money do you have in your IRA?
What other kinds of investments do you have?
How long until you retire?
Do you plan on starting a second career when you retire?
What is your tolerance for risk?
Are you planning on leaving some in bonds, or will you move the whole thing to equities?
Do you think the stock market has bottomed?
Do you think that the stock market is the best place for your money, or is there some better investment ( such as pesticides, or SuperCricketCleanupGoo ) which could be held in an IRA?
Are crickets really a good source of protein?
Have you tried Soylent Chirp? It really is very tasty on crackers, or especially on tortilla chips. My personal favorite is a peanut butter and Soylent Chirp sandwich on wheat, with lettuce and tomato.

Here in upstate NY and much of the north east coast there have been an incredible number of dear tick bites one of the largest numbers or amounts of dear ticks in a great time. I have myself have been bit twice and had 8 on me so far this year after never seeing one in all the years we have owned this house and woods.

The reason? Early snow before any frost so eggs or the number of eggs that are most years killed by the frost were not. The snow insulated them and, many ticks. The same will be with misquotes and more so because of the VERY wet spring.

No plague from a God just cause and effect.

Agreed; however to a hard core fundie the causes you cited are the result of intentions by their capricious creator.
Their argument remains that science may be able to discern what happened but it has no answer as to why.
In their minds the why is only reconcilable in theology.
 
Why 'mormon' crickets?

Well, if you look closely, they travel in pairs, wear funny underwear, and the other species of crickets think they're creepy.
 
They are called Mormon crickets because when Salt Lake City was first founded, the crickets were threatening to wipe out the crops. Brigham Young prayed and God sent seagulls to eat the crickets. They were known thereafter as mormon crickets.

Even if I were still a good little Mormon boy, I wouldn't be too worried about these crickets being a sign of the end times. Cricket infestations are farirly common around here. Granted this is a particularly bad year but it's not as if it never happend before.

As to why they are called Mormon Crickets it's because early Mormon settlers got a bad infestation of them in their first year and (according to church lore) nearly got starved out.

According to the story, the mormons prayed and great swarms of Seagulls ate the crickets so the settlers didn't starve. This is why there is a statue of a Seagull in Salt Lake city. The local crickets have been called Mormon Crickets ever since.

St. Urho's day is celebrated on 16 March, coincidentally one day before St. Patrick's day.

My cats do eat crickets and any other bugs that suites their fancy.

Is it the LDS end of times? No, not until there is an LDS Temple in every country and land on the face of this earth, which to my knowledge is not the case at the moment.

Why Mormon Crickets? Because in the early times of the Mormon church, shortly after Utah was settled by the Mormons, they had a nasty infestation of the crickets which destroyed crops, and led to starvation conditions, but then the worthy prayed and god sent seagulls to gulp those darn crickets up.

Yes, they are a natural manisfestations that is caused by a plentitude of food sources which allows the little buggers to breed like rabbits.
