Just got a Kindle.

I sent my two Word docs with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to my Kindle yesterday. Both converted very well (except for the table of contents) and are marvelous.

How about any maps or other graphics? You might try saving the files as web pages and either send them to be converted or use Calibre. I've had better success that way. Word docs or rtf don't seem to let graphics or tables of contents convert properly.

Well, since I built the entire file in word, I didn't include any maps. But you're correct about the table of contents. It was an almost utter fail. I ended up going from two pages of TOC to something like ten or twelve. It was quite annoying to scroll through it just to see how the rest of the text turned out (which was very good, actually, kept the formatting and so forth).

Sounds cool. You could always scan in the maps and runes and Elvish text and insert them in your Word files so they are correctly part of the books.

That's true, but it sounds like effort, and after typing the entire four book series out, I'm a little tuckered. :D

I am extremely annoyed with Amazon right now.

I just ordered a free ebook from them. The only option they would give me for delivery was to wirelessly deliver it to my Android device. I don't have wireless internet in my home. So I downloaded the PC app thinking I could download the book to that and sideload it to my ereader. The Kindle app on my ereader refused to acknowledge that the file existed. After a little digging, I found that the files on my PC were azw files and the files on my ereader were mobi files.

So I can't read the book I just ordered on my ereader until I have time to go to a wireless hotspot and download it.

I'm not sure that I've understood what you just described, but when I have downloaded books to my computer to put onto my Kindle, I don't download them to a Kindle app. I just download it to my desktop and then move it over using the USB cable. When Amazon asks where to send it, one of the options is "transfer via computer".

I guess I didn't realize until just now that you can't download to a computer for transfer and transfer to anything other than a Kindle device, not the apps. Bummer.

They didn't give me the "transfer via computer" option. :(

What happened is that I have 2 options: have it sent wirelessly to my Android device or download it to the PC app. I didn't have the 2nd option until I downloaded the PC app.

I found out the hard way that Amazon is using 2 different formats. For Kindles and the PC app, they use the azw format. For Android devices they use the mobi format. The Android app will not read the azw format (Amazon's proprietary format).

I had a serious WTF moment when I realized that Amazon's app won't read Amazon's format.

I'll have to wait until I can get to a hotspot to be able to download the book in the correct format for my ereader. Very annoying.

Have you looked in the 'archived items' section on the other devices? Every single book I've purchased for kindle has shown up in every other device's archived items regardless of how I initially delivered it.

ETA: Oh I see, you have no network access on the other device. In that case you are probably out of luck until you do.

Have you tried contacting them about it? From what I've read in this and another thread, they seem to have pretty good customer service.

Yes, that's exactly where it would show up on my device, but I can't access it without wifi.

For one free book I can't be bothered. I was venting rather than seeking a solution, but thanks. :)

Hmmm, yeah, Calibre will not talk to the Kindle app. Just tested it.

However, you CAN connect your Android device to the internet through your computer without WiFi;

That should get you going. Then the app will happily talk to Amazon on the cable and you are done.
Thanks, but that's way beyond my computer skills. If there are any developers reading this, you should make an app to do that. That would be extremely useful. ;)

Okay, I gave you bad advice. I've looked into it a bit more and this option is only offered for azw files. So it only shows you this option if you have a Kindle (or the PC app).

On the other hand, maybe it's time to set up wi-fi in your home. ;)

You didn't give me bad advice. When I looked at the "how buying works" link on Amazon it suggested downloading to your PC and then sideloading if you didn't have access to wireless. It said nothing about it not working if you don't have a Kindle. I don't see how anyone could reasonably be expected to know that.

I'm seriously considering it. However, I have other things on my plate right now, so that's a project for the future. :)
