I know there is a NZ politics thread, but I think we need some commentary on NZ PM Ardern.

I have always liked her, but I have never experienced her style of government.

She has acted in an exemplary manner after the Christchurch massacre, coming across as genuine and compassionate. Her decision to take some time over gun control and not make a knee-jerk decision is wise.

But she may have feet of clay.

So comments on her as PM and as a person generally.

I don't know enough about what she is doing on gun control. The initial stories I heard was that she was going to change the gun laws. If she is now saying that she doesn't want to make a knee-jerk reaction then it makes sense. I want laws and regulations to be effective rather than those which are just supposed to be placatory.

In terms of how she has appeared, she does indeed appear compassionate and has unequivocally condemned the shooting and the ideology behind it. Of course, that latter part is a really low bar to hurdle and yet some politicians, who I won't name because I don't want to go off topic, have somehow not been able to do that.

I have no doubt NZ will effectively ban semi-automatics, but too quick a decision will create a bigger backlash than the inevitable one to come.

"... She became something of a celebrity, appearing on US chatshows. But was there any substance to her? That question is asked of all women leaders. What is underneath? Where is the steel?

Now, in the most horrific of circumstances, we have seen the steel. We have seen the qualities that define leadership in such a way that it is clear she is a lioness and that to call so many of our current leaders donkeys is a disservice to hardworking donkeys the world over."

Sums it up for me.

I just watched her interview with Waheed Ali. Breathtaking. I had tears in my eyes. Such strength, composure and compassion. We have had strong, charismatic leaders in Australia, but I don’t think any of them match her.

The interview has just been broadcast live so I don’t have a link. Look it up please.

We have had strong, charismatic leaders in Australia, but I don’t think any of them match her.

I said in the attack thread that it's funny how it worked out for her. Seven weeks prior to the election, she and Labour were looking at another certain three years on the Opposition benches, with her as deputy leader.

Bang! And she's leader. Loses the election, but not by enough for National to form a government.

Bang! The unbelievable happens and two parties who are a full 360o apart join together to hoist her to Prime Minister. The Aussie equivalent would be PUP and Pauline Hansen doing a deal with Labor.

The reality of her trying to hold a disparate group together and govern was starting to bite and she was in the midst of introducing a deeply unpopular capital gains tax.

Then the mosque attacks happen and she's thrown onto the world stage, which universally loves her performance (not that any of it is contrived - she is just the right person at the right time) and all Kiwis reflect in her glory with a great deal of pride.

"Yeah, mate - we're showing the world how to act: inclusiveness, getting rid of guns inside a week, no thoughts and prayers." (she's officially agnostic, despite a Mormon upbringing)

For god's sake, the Mongrel Mob have given up their Hitler slogans - she's turned the entire country into a mass of white supremacist-haters.

Even the most hardened National supporter would be aware that even their darling, John Key, if he'd stayed in the job, wouldn't have got within light years of Ardern's response.

The big question now is whether her mana will hold through to the next election, which is 18 months away. Being such an overwhelming event, I think it might and she might be able to make some real progress.

I've made the comment they should call an election in about two month's time. Go to the country and say, we need a mandate on what we're doing and just play scenes of Ardern with world leaders. They would win in an unprecedented landslide.

They won't do that, though. Pity.

If you held a poll, I would expect her to rate as the most popular politician - or even person - on the planet right now.

I don’t get the opposition to a capital gains tax. Why shouldn’t capital gains (not on the family home perhaps) be taxed just like other income?

Anyway, I agree with the rest of your post.

There are very few politicians in history who come across as genuinely........genuine.

Her feet of clay will soon enough come to light. She is not perfect. But until that happens, let us celebrate her.

Tyrant. Acts like people are slaves and she is their master. Just like the slave master, she determines what the chattel may and may not read.

Do you think she could take a short flight west and become our P.M.. Our shallow gene pool of P.Ms. is embarrassing. Or maybe we could become part of N.Z.. Maybe NSW could separate and join N.Z..:)

Piss off.

We'll take Vic, SA & Tassie. Not that Tasmania's good or anything, but it fits well with South Island, and nobody in Aussie wants them anyway.

NSW, QLD, ACT & NT can sail off to Indo, mate.

You can be South Papua.

A "lioness." Oh dear how far this place has fallen.

What you people don't understand is the leader of New Zealand can afford to parade around in a hijab while breastfeeding. She's the leader of small island nation no one cares about.

Had there been a Mosque attack in the US and Hilary Clinton had been president and paraded around in a hijab, that'd be considered the Western world's unconditional surrender to Muslims. (Though I don't think Hilary would've been that bad of a president.) The consequences for the leader of the world's sole superpower are far reaching, while leaders of ****** island nations can parade around like circus clowns.

Pathetically ignorant comment.

The news media of the planet has been focused on Ardern. She was on the front page of almost every newspaper and news site in the world, and for days on end.

She drew praise from leaders across the religious and cultural divide. From Erdogan to Trudeau, people outside of USA took notice and said so.

Whether anyone can find NZ on a map doesn't even matter, she made her mark and I'd say she has infinitely more respect internationally than the orange turd you have as president. Thanks to people like Trump dominating the negative news, Ardern had the opportunity to show a different approach to the world and the world saw it.

Because she can afford to goof off like lost damsel and still get praise from GloboHomo. Other countries have more important things to worry about.

Erdogan is a religious conservative who is forcing his country backwards. He is guilty of many human rights violations and has banned internet access on numerous occasions. Turkey now has more imprisoned members of the press than any other country in the world.
Trudeau is a virtue signalling hypocritical prat who is currently embroiled in a nasty scandal that has him and his party with only about 30% support. The Canadian public have seen that their once beloved SJW is an emperor without any clothes.
I suggest that pointing to these very poor leaders as supporting Arden is damning her with very faint praise.
