Is this precautionary in light of imminent terrorist attacks expected... or as claimed, a culmination of a long standing dispute?

(Reuters) - "Israeli diplomats launched an unprecedented strike on Sunday, forcing the complete closure of embassies around the world as they escalated a dispute over pay, officials said. The industrial action has already threatened to postpone a visit by Pope Francis to Israel planned for May - one of 25 trips by foreign officials affected by a work slowdown the diplomats began on March 5 when wage talks broke down.

By escalating the action to a full strike - the first by the diplomatic corps since the country's establishment in 1948 - the diplomats will close all of Israel's 102 missions abroad, paralyzing most diplomatic work with other countries and the United Nations. "We are completely shutting down the (foreign ministry) office and missions abroad. This is the first time ever," ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said.

Another ministry official told Reuters: "As of now, the foreign ministry doesn't exist. It's not possible even to submit complaints". Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman Called the strike "irresponsible" and "a wretched decision and a display of a loss of control on union's part."

"We shall do whatever possible to minimize the damage to the country and its citizens," Lieberman said. Diplomats said the strike - involving some 1,200 foreign service employees - was open-ended and had been called after the Treasury had failed to present any acceptable proposals. They are demanding an increase in monthly salaries, which they put at 6,000-9,000 shekels ($1,700-$2,600), and want compensation for spouses forced to quit jobs due to foreign postings. They say about a third of their number has quit in the past 15 years due to poor wages. Yacov Livne, spokesman for the diplomats' union, said: "the Treasury is determined to destroy the foreign ministry and Israeli diplomacy."

For when...

"Striking Israeli Diplomats shut down Embassies over pay dispute"

isn't dramatic enough.

I doubt it is perpetration for a terrorist attack. There aren't any terrorist organizations big and sophisticated enough to plan the kind of worldwide, massive, multiple-target, synchronized attack that would justify shutting down all Israel's embassies worldwide.

I don't think I've ever heard of an entire countries diplomatic service go on strike though. I'm not sure whether to be impressed at the coordination and solidarity or terrified that all those "diplomats" are going to leave their posts unmanned.

Weird.

Those diplomats will be in trouble if leaving their posts unmanned turns out to be no big deal.

"Looks like we don't need those guys after all!" :)

Neither have I. But if the information in the Reuters article the OP linked to is correct:

If those wages are correct, that strike is long overdue. I wouldn't bother getting out of bed in the morning for that kind of pay. (with the caveat whether those are net or gross wages and what other renumeration, like free housing, they get).

I would be surprised if this number represents the actual wages that they get. The system here allows for various additions and benefits, which can add quite a lot on top of the basic wage as defined in your pay slip. I am not sure which numbers they gave the press.

Nevertheless, they probably deserve a pay raise. Especially if their salary eroded when compared to what is offered in other government services. I have not seen any information comparing regarding this.

Yeah, this is the bit I don't get. The Israeli Foreign Service being sufficiently screwed up that all of its employees are willing to go on a simultaneous, world-wide strike is sufficiently bad enough as is. Why the need to dress it up to be somehow even worse? :boggled:

While the significance remains unknown, the fact remains that Israels' embassies, consulate office, an foreign ministry offices abroad have all closed - worldwide - and for the first time EVER... All official channels to communicate with Israel are closed to the world...

Exactly.

It's an astounding situation and a condemnation of the status of the Israeli Foreign Service. That said, the folks trying to dress it up with vague fearmongering about terrorist attacks are, to be blunt, letting their imaginations run off without any facts.

Has anyone reached out to their local embassy for comment?

Exactly... Well, unless COBRA is real...

No they aren't. The US embassy in Israel, for example, is still open, and can still talk to the Israeli government through official channels in-country.

(ETA: Horatius beat me to it)

You know, I think you're right- this is clearly a prelude to the Rapture, and all the Israeli diplomats want to get home in time for it, but don't want to alert the gentiles....

Isn't the in-country official channel still the state Foreign Service?

Is it only overseas-posted diplomats who have gone on strike, or the entire Foreign Service?
