Is boredom extinct?

Was thinking about this today. In first world countries, we have computers, DVD's, free music, Ipods, PSP's, cell phones and all kinds of portal constant diversions.

When's the last time, outside of work, you were really bored? I really can't think of it for me.

I get bored all the time. It doesn't mean there's nothing to do. It means there's nothing I feel like doing.

I think it's worth distinguishing between being genuinely occupied by something and merely filling time with an activity (didn't Hesse talk about this in the Glass Bead Game?). Are you bored if your mind is too lulled into passivity to experience the boredom?


Gosh, that reads rather smug and pompous, doesn't it? Can't be bothered changing it. Bored!
