iPhone 6 and iOS 8

I can't think of a mainline phone that doesn't need one for the vast majority of people.

Why exactly? In my experience, at least half the people I see don't use a case.

And for those that do, most would be simple rubber or leather protectors with no reinforcement, just to keep it shiny. They aren't going to stop a phone bending if it is prone to bend.

Upgrade via iTunes - that does not have the same requirements as on device.

And don't upgrade the 4(s) (I assume - I don't think the 4 is upgradeable) - from what I hear you may not be happy with that on your device.
The 4S is upgradable, the 4 and below are not.

I upgraded my 4S, and installed the new 8.0.2 patch. On the up side the upgrade went rather smoothly, on the down side "meh".

I'm obviously due for a new phone here, and I've been debating sticking with the iPhone or going droid. From what I have seen re iOS8 and/or the iPhone 6 class I am thus far underwhelmed.

That's what I've read too-- I'm not going to upgrade.

So… anyone know how to turn off the upgrade reminder (that red '1' on Settings)?

MAYBE settings->notifications->phone ->badge app icon

??

ETA: of course - that's on iOS 8. Is it the same for 7 ... I would have to go look at an older device ...

Apple patch is out for shellshock.

http://lists.apple.com/archives/security-announce/2014/Sep/msg00001.html

OS X bash Update 1.0 is now available and addresses the following:

Bash
Available for: OS X Lion v10.7.5, OS X Lion Server v10.7.5, OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.5,
OS X Mavericks v10.9.5
Impact: In certain configurations, a remote attacker may be able to execute arbitrary
shell commands
Description: An issue existed in Bash's parsing of environment variables. This issue was
addressed through improved environment variable parsing by better detecting the end of
the function statement.
This update also incorporated the suggested CVE-2014-7169 change, which resets the
parser state.
In addition, this update added a new namespace for exported functions by creating a
function decorator to prevent unintended header passthrough to Bash. The names of all
environment variables that introduce function definitions are required to have a
prefix "__BASH_FUNC<" and suffix ">()" to prevent unintended function passing via
HTTP headers.
CVE-ID
CVE-2014-6271 : Stephane Chazelas
CVE-2014-7169 : Tavis Ormandy

OS X bash Update 1.0 may be obtained from the following webpages:

Thanks for giving me the right keywords to search for ("iPhone settings app badge"), but it looks like there's no way to remove the badge on a non-jailbroken iPhone. Oh well.

The benefit that applies to the largest swath of people and cases is adding a slight ridge around the screen so that it's less prone to scratching on drops. This is, and has been, one of the things iPhones are more prone to than some others because of the 'slick' design of having very flat faces. Then there are drops themselves, and even rubber bumpers help there especially with phones that are mostly metal and glass. Yes, a silicon sleeve isn't going to help with the bending and a plastic shell isn't going to do much if anything either for that problem. My observation was mostly that none of the phones shown with issues had cases sitting next to them, or screen shields, or any of marks left from cases. Yes, it could be that they took off all that and cleaned to phones for the pictures...which to me seems and odd choice when showing damage done to a phone. One would think that protective measures, even ones that wouldn't help with that specific issue, would be left to show that they weren't unaware of protecting to phone and that it was a real, used, unit and not bent just to show they can bend.

My experience selling phones was that case use was around 70-80%. More importantly, phones that had issues were far more likely to be ones without cases. Now that might be correlation in that people who get cases are more likely to be people who are concerned about taking care of the phone in the first place, but there were enough issues that would/could have be prevented by a case and screen protector. Screen scratches effecting usability were the most common. But even good screen protectors are dirt cheap. If you're worried about putting the protector on without getting a bunch of stuff stuck to it, ask at your provider for the person who's good at putting them on to clean your phone and put one on for you. That was me at my old job, and although it could take some time (especially with the lower quality screen protectors which were NOT always the same as the cheap ones) I would almost always get them on cleanly, with at most one small hair in the non-screen area. The two times I messed up and got something stuck to the protector I couldn't remove with spray, we member sat'ed a new one and I put that one on.

Back to the main issue, I'd advise a fairly strong case for people new to large phones. I was going to get an Armor series Otterbox for my Note 3 (so I could keep it on me while doing construction and getting wet), but it never came out for that phone. In fact, I'm still rocking the little cheap leather and plastic stand/wallet/case I got as a placeholder. I just put it in a plastic hardcase when I'm doing heavy stuff, and in a Ziplock freezer bag when I'm hiking or doing something where I might get wet (and sometimes to read in the bathtub). But I'm large guy who often is carrying some kind of bag. My pockets are large enough to hold the phone without bending even when I sit. I don't have to hold it oddly because it's sized for my hand very nicely. There were no 'small phone' habits for me to break. Other people? Smaller hands, smaller pockets, used to just keeping it in their pocket all the time and not taking it out when they sit down (and then trying to get it out of those smaller pockets while still seated when they need it instead of standing up to get it out), and that a lot of people simply don't treat the devices with much care fore even obvious stuff like not throwing it onto a chair or bed or table. Yes it can bounce off and then hit the floor, and I have no idea why so many people don't consider that a possibility. 'I didn't know it could bounce.' There are people who can get away with not having a case because of some combination of luck, care, or lifestyle. I can't tell who exactly that is beforehand, in and in my experience most people can't tell if that's true of themselves beforehand either.

I do have a screen protector that I've changed once, and glad I did because it has saved me scratches.

/almost off topic rant.

There is not; this has been a complaint for many years.

The only way to remove it would be, if you had a backup from before checking for the update (and the badge appearing)....and of course don't mind going back to your backup.

The only other option would be, create a back page and dump the settings icon there. Yes it will still be there, taunting you....but taunting you from a unseen last page.

Want to check if that iPhone you’re considering nabbing off of Craigslist is stolen before you hand over your cold, hard cash?

Apple has just released a tool that exists solely to verify whether or not a used iPhone has been locked down remotely by its rightful owner.

All you need is the IMEI or the serial number. Punch one of those in, and it’ll tell you whether or not the device is activation locked, and whether or not it’s ready for a new Apple ID to sign in.

Great idea.

I ordered the iPhone 6 from ATT and received it the next day. What's the benefit of buying one from Craigslist?

It's for people looking for less expensive/older/used iphones. And CL is a great way to do that.

Ah. You posted this in the iPhone 6 thread, so I had that model in my head when I read your comment.

On the NewsHour tonight they said that today's market fall was triggered by a 4% (IIRC) drop in Apple stock due to the bad patch. My first thought was, this once again confirms it, the stock market is completely irrational.

It's craps for rich guys. Gambling, nothing more.

On-topic, I really like the way that the speech recognition works in ios8. You see the words as you go, rather than after you are done speaking.

I think it's a much cooler looking affect.

Siri, in general, hasn't improved very rapidly, though. And still can't string together actions too well. :(

You may be right, but I just showed this to my friend with the Samsung galaxy 4, and he said "wow mine waits until you're done speaking to show the words. ". Maybe it's a custom keyboard thing.
