Intelligent Design on PBS

Silicon,

How good are your sources at your local PBS station? Would it be at all feasible to get some sort of memorandum sent around to all PBS stations about the true nature of this show?

My contact was at the school board. I don't know anyone at the station. As far as I know, the pulling of the show may have seemed autocratic to the folks at the station.

I haven't read this whole thread, but I read the part where you guys actually went to your local tv station and put a stop to this, and I think it's great.

I haven't seen the tv special, nor will I, but I wouldn't necessarily equate Intelligence with God, i.e. I don't think the producers of the show had a religious agenda. I think it could've been more about that Von Daniken crap and his space aliens.

Frostbite,

You may not want to read the whole convoluted thread, but here are some links to show that:

1. It is a christian produced program.
2. It was produced for the specific purpose of promoting christian creationist Intelligent Design.
3. It is part of a political strategy to undermine Evolution education in our schools.
4. It features starring figures of the "God did it, not Evolution" ID crowd.

This show is created by a group called IllustraMedia,

which is actually a front for "The Discovery Institute", a Creationist Christian political organization.

This video is proported to be part of "Phase II" of Discovery's "Wedge Project" that is designed to get
Creationism and Christianity into our public schools:

Here's a methodical dissection of the entire show by Andrea Bottaro, PhD Assistant Professor Medicine,
Microbiology and Imunology, Oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center. This is one of the best
letters, as it goes in depth about the terrible non-scientific claims of this show.

Here's a choice quote from her, that should be enough to get anyone to understand that this show is
religious in nature:

Unlocking the Mystery of Life" is the first and only production of an entity called "IllustraMedia". In
fact, "IllustraMedia" is one and the same with "Discovery Media Productions"1. Discovery Media is a
production company whose previous videos are devoted to evangelical topics, such as "Heaven and
Hell" and "The End Times"2. While there is nothing wrong with an evangelical video company producing a
science documentary, the fact that to do so it was felt necessary to create a "shell" production outfit
highlights the aura of ambiguity that pervades the entire enterprise (more examples to
follow). Furthermore, the purpose of the video as a propagandistic and religious, rather than
scientific/educational tool is underscored by how UML is being publicized within fundamentalist circles. For
instance, Mission Frontiers, the Bulletin of the evangelical U.S. Center for World Missions,
hails it as "the most impressive evangelistic tool ever made"3.

Here's the letter from the Professor of Anatomy at Howard University, and research associate at the
Smithsonian:

Frostbite brings up an interesting point when dealing with ID creationists.

If they're so darn scrupulously avoiding mention who this Intelligent Designer happens to be in their model...

I wonder if it's possible to subvert their ruse. Suggest, or argue that their evidence points to a designer they WOULDN'T like.

Hey, can anyone find some 666's in the DNA sequence in a gene that's common to all life??

If they're so darned determined to create gaps in understanting, and fill them with supernatural causes, we can fill those gaps as well. Jam their crappola arguments. We can insert our OWN designer. Aliens, the Devil...

Hmmm... maybe a pantheon of multiple gods? That would seem less obvious than satan, but still cheese off the id'ers.

Then we use all their arguments back at them.

"They Censored the idea! What do they have to hide?"

"Teach the controversy"

KLCS's website has been updated. The scheduled airing of Unlocking the Mysteries of Life at 10pm August 4th has been replaced by "James Thurber: The Life and Hard Times."

Nobody seems to have alerted Illustramedia, who still claim that KLCS will be running UML.

Haaaa-haaaaa!

I was going to reply to Maryland Public Television's reply to my criticism for showing a thinly-veiled religious show presenting itself as science ("fairness" was their excuse)...but tonight they were highlighting a touchy-feely-natural good-health guru--the infamous Gary Null. Last year I redirected my PBS contribution to a skeptics' organization after PBS tried to gain my contribution by airing a show on enniograms (SP?).

Is PBS really trying to compete head-to-head (or butt-to-butt) with Fox?
