I'm becoming increasingly curious as to the (real) history of the government, CIA, and its projects during the Cold War, and the recent history of the Middle East and Central Asia, so I'm wondering if you guys could point me to some books on the matter. Someone in another thread (Phantom Wolf I think) suggested Ghost Wars, and someone else (Quad maybe?) suggested The Looming Tower on Screw Loose Change's forum. I'm getting them, but what about good sources on like MK-ULTRA, or the Mossad and such? A lot of those books and sources I've seen concerning those are tinged with level of woo, at least to me, but then they could be fairly wooish anyway.

I'm asking you because you guys are probably the most rational group of people on the Internet, so this is the only forum I trust to ask it. Everyone else would give me their own take, and that not what I'm after. I want objectivity here, and considering these subjects are pretty murky in their own right, finding objective sources is difficult.

So, any good suggestions?

Not sure if this fulfills your needs, but to get at the origins of the CIA, I'd recommend The Last Hero, a biography of Wild Bill Donovan, Medal of Honor Winner in WW I, who founded the OSS and thus the CIA.

His networks of friends and acquaintances is a fascinating prelude to the Cold War and how some things got done.
