IE 6.0 question

Is there a setting on IE 6.0 (with SP1) to toggle whether a new window opens maximized or "restored"?

I prefer to keep my browsers maximized. There are many times when I need to open a link in a new tab or a new window because the page I'm linking from is "live" and will have expired if I direct-link and then use the "Back" button to return for the next link. (When I'm browsing in Mozilla or Netscape I open in a new tab/page of the same window, but IE does not have this feature.)

The IE window always opens "restored."

It's a minor nuisance to keep maximizing the windows, but one I could normally live with, ... but when I maximize a newly opened "restored" window which has a bookmark (such as a thread opened to the first unread post), I lose the bookmark. It is quite frustrating!

I'm not the owner of the computer, so I have to use IE. Suggesting I use Mozilla or Netscape (I only wish!) is, unfortunately, not the answer. If IE has been updated since 6.0, I can't upgrade, either, though I can suggest it.

If anyone knows of some way to get the browser to default to opening maximized, I would be most grateful.

Thank you.

I think you have to maximize the window and then restart Windows without closing IE first.

From http://theeldergeek.com/maximize_internet_explorer.htm

- Drag the corners of the smaller IE window until it completely fills the screen. Do not use the maximize button to enlarge the window.
- Hold down the Ctrl key, keep it depressed, and using the mouse click File and then Exit on the menu bar. Do not use the "X" in the upper right corner to close the window.
- Internet Explorer should now open in a full window.
- If it still opens to a smaller size repeat the above instructions, substituting the "Shift" key for the "Ctrl" key.

I don't use IE anymore, but this was the trick I figured out on my own.

Like RayG said, size the window until it's as big as you can make it, but don't hit maximize.

Then click on any link that opens up in the same window. Now close IE and restart it. The browser won't be fully maximized, but you can maximize it, and any links that open in a new window will start out in the "big" (but not maximized) size.

Does that make sense?

Thanks, RayG, that works, sort of. The new windows are still opening "restored," but now the "restored" size is consistantly the whole screen. Close enough, as they say, for government work. :relieved:
