I Hate Windows 8.

If you were studying them all so carefully how did you miss the one that was labelled "Desktop"?

I didn't. I was pointing out the extra useless 'fluff' for me. You know, the stuff I disliked. I'll try and be more obvious next time. The desktop box was literally the only one that was useful to me.

That's "Desktop", one click away. The extra click never seemed like a great trial. I could take burden.
I would have preferred they simply booted to the desktop to begin with. That way I avoid the other fluff they're trying to feed me.

Seems like an unhealthy fascination to me. I'm not sure why you bothered.
Nothing unhealthy about it, just pointing out what I disliked about their new interface, and the useless boxes they assumed I'd be interested in. When I go into a restaurant the server doesn't come over and put random selections from the menu down in front of me in the hopes I'll like them. Do they do that for you? I hope not. Give me a knife, fork, spoon, and napkin, and let me decide the rest.

Why in the world would such a funny post lambasting that which is Metro make you think the person didn't know how to get to the desktop??

Especially after they had just described how they had to get to the internet through the media UI on AOL way back when. It's not like they said they were stuck in the UI and never made it to the internet...

Windows 8 reminds me [mercy SNIP]

Jesus Christ, Ray!
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
tl;dr

ETA: I'm getting a little tired of people telling me how old they are, and then continuing some rant as if their age supports whatever they believe.

Maybe not, but they do give you a menu.

You're complaining about the menu having too many choices on it.

So, here I am, many years later, with a brand new Windows 8 computer. Let's see what's on the stupid touch screen. I say stupid because I'm using a desktop with a mouse, don't have a touchscreen monitor, and have no intention of buying a touchscreen monitor. Hmmm... what do I have...
Sometimes even I forget how stupid the default selection of icons are, on that screen. I've been too busy picking on how badly the icon interface works, as a whole!

Thanks for reminding me.

among the problems ive experienced with Windows 8/8.1:
none of these occurred with my old (less powerful) laptop which ran on Vista.
-frozen cursor
-jumping cursor
-spontaneous shutdowns
-updates that take millenia to complete.
-application settings being wiped out by updates
-spontaneous black screen (which requires hard reboot)
-unresponsive programs
-unresponsive keyboard
-icons that flicker
im ready to give up...

And yet I have so far suffered from exactly none of these issues, on either of the two year old Win8 machines we have here.

I wonder what the difference could be?

Step one: Install ClassicShell (google it. Its free)
Step two: Setup interface like Win7 and make sure it boots directly to desktop
step three: Install a spamware/spybot/mallware remover like Ccleaner (pearsoft) and run a complete, exhaustive antivirus scan as deep as you can get it,
Step four: Convince spouse that keeping classic shell is the best way to go.

Step one: get a Mac

Zero problems with this 2009 vintage Dell laptop that previously had Vista. I did do a clean install, though. I have had literally no problems with Windows 8/8.1 beyond the adjustment to it.

It is surprising that MS didn't just have a choice for a Win7 shell.

Win9 will likely be along soon as a free upgrade that will probably add that.

More like an annual lease to use the latest version of their OS.

Can I please join the group of people who hate Windows 8? Or Microsoft Astigmatism Simulator as it should more accurately be known.

Seriously, whats going on with the blurred text? Was it coded by Robin Thicke? Argggh! My eyes!

I see there is actually a 420 post thread on the MS support site. It now over a year old and no help from MS.

WTF man.

Win8 uptake is way too low. The buzz is that MS will offer a free update to get people to switch.

They already tried a financial incentive, which apparently didn't help.

You may have noticed a resurgence of PC manufacturers selling Win7 units.

New Win7 PCs were scarce. Now they aren't.

I think the crunch will come when large orgs are due to update and say pretty much "no, our people can use that load of crap" at which point their hand will be forced.

I wish I had stuck with Win7!

Finally bit the bullet with a reconditioned laptop, a steal. The Win 8 (re)install was borked. No metro apps worked so I couldn't even add a new account. Fortunately I had a DVD and reinstalled. Relatively painless compared to other windows installs but put me in the "some promise but released a half-assed version". For example to add a user properly I had to use the metro settings panel and the control panel. Why push me to add email accounts for a child's account? For an adult, OK, but a specically labelled child account?
I bought Start 8 and Modern Mix together for $7.99 and started using it they way I want to. Yes I found the desktop straight away and then win 8 and my reflexes went in a death match. Buying a touch monitor? Ergonomics much? I want minimal travel when using this and switching between apps or flicking between code windows and prespectives in STS (Eclipse). With a stylus, yes I could see that working. It works on my tablet and phone (both android). The wireless Trackman sounds like a good idea, thanks.
Now I have Modern Mix and Start8 I can stop the laptop fighting with me and start exploring what it can do for me. The restaurant analogy I'd use is the waiter starting off by telling me he's really an author and keep trying to get me to read a sample of his work while I'm trying to read the menu. It may be very good but tell me about it when I'm not trying to grab some food in my lunch break.
I do like the fact that they seem to have finally got widgets (or whatever they're called now) working right. Little bits of functionality you can hook together to do stuff is cool.

I don't have this problem with blurriness. I'm using an HP g7 laptop with a 17in. (1600x900) display. Pretty plain vanilla.

Reading through the thread you linked to, it looks like most of the people with problems were having them specifically with IE10 (but not IE9) and Office 2013 (but not Office 2010).

I don't use any of those programs at all, so maybe that's why I have been spared the issue.

The fan finally gave up on my Vaio and so instead of having it replaced, I bought a new ASUS G750. I like it but it has Windows 8.1. I have gotten the desktop set up but I am having some amount of difficulty with some key sequences flipping me over to the stupid tablet based interface.

I also have none of these problems. Many of these sound like symptoms of hardware problems of some sort.

Well, and lack of sufficient RAM (or an effective RAM management system) becomes more of a hardware problem when using advanced OS features. IOW, the difference between using XP at max RAM conditions, and using Win8 at minimal RAM and HD capacities Is a whole different experience than using Win8.1 on a Lenova twist laptop/tablet within a robust hardware environment. Admittedly, the advantages are less noticeable in the Desktop system (even with the touch screen). I don't miss my mouse.
