My advice would be to install "Avast!" anti-virus, update it and schedule it to run a scan on start-up. Also, you can build a windows "live CD" using a piece of software called "Ultimate Boot CD For Windows" (UBCD4Win), and from that you can run software such as SpyBot (and you can edit your registry) etc, I find it invaluable for recovering machines - infinitely more useful than something such as Knoppix IMO since it's actually a native Windows OS running in RAM rather than *nix and all the troubles you face with things such as NTFS read/write mounting.
