It's time to play Spot the Idiot.
“Right now, funders are using a restrictive definition of literacy,” she said. “It’s mostly print-based. There are different kinds of ways people can express themselves beyond the written word.”

Most efforts today focus mostly on the mind and sometimes a bit on the body, she said.

“But then 50 per cent of your being isn’t being addressed,” she said. “You have to engage the heart and soul in educational activities.”

George said that she uses the medicine wheel in her approach.

Ann Marie Downie, executive director of Literacy Nova Scotia, said the goal of the workshop is to help people understand that literacy is more than just words on a page.
And here I thought the goal of a literacy workshop would be to teach people to read.

It's Nova Scotia. As long as you can skate and develop a good wrist-shot you don't need to read.

My theory is that the goal today is to create those that know half of it: They can't read, but nothing stops them from writing.

Any internet forum proves my theory ... :p

It looks like a classic case of avoiding failur by redefining your goals.

Avoiding what? :p

I've been experementing with alternative spellings in order to address the entirety of the communication process, and not just the cold emotionless technical aspects. It's more than just "words on a page," I want my readers to engage their whole being, not just their minds. :p

“Literacy is also problem solving, communication, and being able to navigate complicated systems in our communities such as the hospital system and banking,” she said

Funny...and here I thought that it was *illiterate* people who had developed coping skills to solve problems such as how to deal with banks, hospitals, and otherwise communicate in a literate society...

Or maybe Ann Marie Downie is too busy being an executive director to actually work with her clients and learn about them.

The lady has confused literacy with communication. Literacy is all about words on a page and the comprehension thereof. Communication is about being able to convey wants, needs and thoughts through any variety of medium; including sign language, written language, spoken language, etc.

Boo

It's absurd. People need to know how to read, words, printed words on a page, the very 'restrictive definition of literacy' they mentioned. Knowing about the medicine wheel won't help them read a newspaper so they can be better informed voters. Knowing colors won't help them read the instructions that come with a prescription.

It's silly.
