Highgate Vampire

Highgate

Dr Adequate,

Sean Manchester - not only 'a right nutter', a complete self-promotionist, too!

Highgate

Mighty Thor,

I like the picture of Klaus in full make-up!

The picture has been superimposed on a photo of the Lebanon Circle, a group of old tombs in Highgate Cemetery. The figure is standing next to the tomb of Carl Rosa who brought opera to millions when he insisted that it be sung in English. The door of the tomb is now broken and has had to be bricked up. Along further on the right, is the vault of Mabel Batten, chatelaine of Victorian society and lover to Radclyffe Hall. Hall was a ground-breaking lesbian writer, author of 'Adams Breed' and 'The Well of Lonliness.' She still carries the scent of scandal following her court case of 1928, in which she and her later lover Una Troubridge were denounced as 'pathetic inverts' by the learned lawyers of the time.

Interestingly enough, the figure is also standing close by to the 'vampire tomb' (allegedly, of course!)

I believe that the judge in Farrant's court case accused him of being 'the real vampire of Highgate.' Not an unreasonable assumption,
Songstress, I don't believe that a vampire actually walked in Highgate becasue I don't believe there are actual vampires.

Your conclusion appears to be that Highgate Vampire was not a real vampire (suggesting that there are real vampires). Is this what you believe or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Highgate

Hello Lothian,

I don't believe in 'real' vampires, either. There are many things in the world that are inexplicable, but vampires are figments of peoples' over-active imaginations, in my opinion. One cannot return from the dead to drink the blood of the living. I may be wrong, so if anyone has any evidence to the contrary, I'd be pleased to revise my opinion!

Umm....'real' vampires as opposed to 'fake' ones - I would describe 'fake' ones to be those people who purport to live the 'vampire lifestyle' including blood-drinking and fitting fake fangs to their teeth, but are mortals, as we all are. Many (not all) are again, a little bit obsessive and attention-seeking. Quite worrying, frankly.

Yet people who think they can talk to and hear dead people are, I presume, NOT worrying?:)

Thanks for the info on the Highgate photo. You certainly do your research.

Highgate

I don't think I said that I speak to dead people. One cannot speak to a dead body!

I have been fascinated by Highgate for a long time. I am something of a local historian and am interested in this area. It really is the epitome of Victorian over-indulgence, especially where that cemetery's concerned. It has retained its village atmosphere and the locals really do protect the surroundings. It has many listed buildings (including the mausolea within the east and west cemeteries) and is home to many famous people.
