...are all republican morons?

Norman Goldman just mentioned on his radio show that there is a congressman Frank(?) Wolfe from Virginia who has not signed idiot boy Grover's no-new-taxes pledge, so there may be one or two with some sense.

GOP Presidential candidate Herman Cain, appearing on ABC’s “The View” on Tuesday, said he feels being gay “is a choice,” and that if elected President, he would reinstate “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the former ban on openly gay military service members.

He can't.

Congress writes the laws for the administration of matters military.

If he thinks he could sell Congress on reverting, why stop at DADT?

Why would he not go back to the full monty of pre DADT, which was sort of like this

"if you're homosexual, we'll find you and toss you out, since it's illegal."
That was the law.

Two things seem to apply to Mr Cain's utterance:

He doesn't understand the issue
He doesn't understand who writes the rules

You know, I think although there are a lot of big mouthed Christian conservatives out there, they don't often vote as much as we think they do. But this guy is never going to win now. What a dumb thing to come out right and say. Sheesh.

Did he give a reason why the military needs to reinstate it?

...and will reinstate DADT.

It amazes me that US politicians can make asinine, ridiculous statements like that without committing instant political suicide.

Hopefully in the very near future, idiocy like Cain's won't be tolerated.

I wouldn't doubt him truethat, a lot of people feel his sentiment in America. Although he may polarize himself, he will definitely have some support from the growing Christian right in this country, including homosexuals who are "former homosexuals who reformed themselves". If the republicans should choose to field Herman Cain as their frontrunner, Obama could have a run for his money, no doubt. In fact a GOP ticket topped off by him and maybe Romney could easily unseat Obama and the democrats.

Dessi they may commit suicide with the left but certainly not amongst the evangelical white conservative population 50 and over, which happens to be a very large chunk of the electorate.

Actually some older Americans and their families are growing more tolerant of his view every day. The growing number of evangelicals should concern us. Another mass Christain revival on the horizon.

Those right wing conservative Christians more often than not, don't vote.

I've worked on a few election campaigns and even if a lot of people secretly agree with him or publicly agree with him, him saying this is way too polarizing for our country. People say that Sarah Palin was awesome as well but she cost John McCain the election. Those people might rant and blab online but typically they don't vote.

Evangelical older people tend not to be as narrow minded as middle aged people are because many of them have experienced family members who have come out or suffered in other ways.

They may agree with him personally, but it's like if someone comes right out and says "I want to make abortion illegal again" only a small subset of voters would vote for someone who says something so specific and antagonizing like that.

He never was going to win, but you're right about this making him even less palatable. I think that the most recent polls showed that a majority of Americans favor gay marriage, so DADT was bound to get tossed. Heck, even Dick Cheney supports it now.

But the run-up to the primaries is very odd. Lots of candidates are trying to make a name as conservatives without any thought as to their overall electability. Santorum and Bachmann fall into this category too. Perry... well, if he keeps saying things like "we should educate kids regardless of where they come from", then he's going to ruin all his conservative credentials.

But come the primaries, Republicans are going to repudiate the hate-merchants. They did it to Huckabee. They will do it to Bachmann, Santorum and Cain. There are one hell of a lot of Republicans who are mortified that their party has been turned into this "who hates more" sideshow. They will nominate Romney and he will run a close, if not winning race. If Obama wins, the crazies will be back in two years to start making idiotic statements again in order to get on TV. They won't win the nomination next time either.

GayPatriot, which endorsed Cain, is calling this part of the Gay Left's smear campaign. Yeah, I'm going to stop reading that blog now, which is sad because it was a source for gay conservative politicking.

The Log Cabin Republicans gave a fine response:

“If Herman Cain truly wants to see the science proving that sexual orientation is not a choice, Log Cabin Republicans would be happy to show it to him,” said Log Cabin Republicans Executive Director R. Clarke Cooper. “The claim that a person chooses to be gay or lesbian has been discredited by every major professional medical organization, starting with the American Psychological Association and the American Medical Association. An individual’s orientation is no more a choice than the color of his skin or whether he is left-handed, and too many people have been hurt because of failed attempts to change the way they were born.”

Linky.

Just more proof that the republicons should never be trusted to run an army. They are too busy worrying about who's bumping whose fuzzy and not enough about whether soldiers get the care they need for traumatic brain injury.

They can't even decide which country to invade for best results.

Pathetic.

There's a bad joke in there somewhere, but I don't think I'm going to go there.

Instruction to the media: Every politician or pundit who proclaims that sexual orientation is a choice should immediately be asked when they chose to be heterosexual.

I agree with this as well. I do know a lot of conservatives who are mortified at what's been going on for the last few years.

If saying that being gay is a choice is somehow supposed to lead to the conclusion that the choice carries with it no right of protection, then we should remind ourselves that beyond any reasonable doubt matters of religion are also choices.

Has anyone told him that being black is a choice?

Depends on how mixed you are. Many "passing" blacks make the choice to pass every day. Not that this is relevant to the current discussion, just an interesting fact. And I would generally agree with your statement.
