Gus is missing

I hope they find him; I won't add alive, since there is little hope of that, but at least if they find him, his family may be able to greve, and move on, however difficult that is after the death of a child. But not knowing what happened to him, not knowing whether he's dead or alive, and perhaps clinging on to hope? That must be the worst possible outcome.

Here's hoping that he wasn't digging a tunnel.

It's not so far-fetched to imagine a similar problem if someone digs into the side of a dirt mound.
No, it really is utterly far fetched. He was 4. Have you had experience with young children? He would not be able to dig a tunnel.

And this would have one of the first things police looked at, and obviously dismissed.

South Australian police have declared the disappearance of Gus Lamont a major crime and say a person who has lived at his outback property is now considered a suspect, but have stressed that the boy's parents are not under investigation.

At an update on the case, Major Crime officer in charge Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke said police executed a warrant at the property in January, conducted a forensic search and seized items.

Update and person of interest.

I find it curious that the police didn’t eliminate members of the family much sooner. Examination of motor vehicles and communication devices strongly suggest that Gus is still alive and in somebody’s custody. Let’s hope so.

Whoever is guilty of the crime it is probably a family member. That is if there was a crime.
It looks like you are right. Kidnapping the child is a serious criminal offence though, and it seems likely the grandmother will do time.
