Goodbye Liberals?

You know that most of the old time Progressive Conservatives have a very low opinion of Peter MacKay, don't you? A friend of mine (who calls himself a small c conservative) typically pairs that name with a long list of expletives that can't be reproduced here... But the general idea is that MacKay is a traitor and a liar.

Yes, I agree with that. He ran for leadership of the Progressive Conservatives, back before the merger, on one platform, and almost immediately upon being elected he went a totally different direction.

I've been a conservative all my voting life, but the current lineup of goofuses really makes me wish the Rhino party would resurrect itself.

I know absolutely nothing about Canadian politics but I did enjoy watching Question Period in your House of Commons yesterday. Quite the rowdy bunch you've got up there running your country.

Yes indeed. For those who think Canadians are excessively polite need only watch a few minutes of Question Period.
It's pretty embarassing actually. These are grown adults and they act like children. But, then again they are politicians. I suppose it's hard to expect much more.

I'm trying to imagine what a Question Period would be like in the U.S. Our current president would be cut to shreds. Have you ever seen the look on his face when he has to answer reporters' questions?:

If I recall correctly, when Bush was up here he specifically avoided addressing Paraliment, the BBC:

The president did not address parliament in the capital, apparently because of the risk of being heckled.

Bush is horrible at unscripted public exchanges and avoids them like the plague. But, you know, he's just a simple brush-farmer from Texas, so what else would you expect?

Sorry, I've hijacked this Canadian politics thread with my Bush-bashing. Carry on...

What I would like to see is if American political humour shows could pull off what the Canadian show do.

Could you imagine Jon Stewart storming into the oval office to chat with Bush, 22 Minutes style? I doubt he would get past the front door.

Storm into the Oval Office? That sounds like a terrorist act to me. He would be branded an enemy combatant, placed in one of our non-existent detainment centers, given a "brisk" interrogation, and left to rot for a few years while charges are drummed up. His only hope for release would be a public groundswell for 'Half-Baked 2'.

Yes. And?

The newspaper coverage here was super funny when she crossed the floor. There was poor Peter, at his farm, with his dog, recovering from his 'broken heart'.

Aside from his other, er 'accomplishments', wasn't he voted like, sexiest man in Ottawa a few years running?

Yeah, Question Period can be pretty funny. I do miss Joe Clark for that, the dude was hilarious!

Goddamn, Rick Mercer's a funny guy. Who was the woman, she'd run around with all the makeup on? Marge Delahaunty, I think was the character?

Although we did get Bush during the first election - hehe, Jean Poutine.

They're trolling a pretty shallow pond with that award, though.

I wouldn't trust McKay any further than I could throw his tractor. He'll do what(who) suits his best interests.

Yeah, it's not like he has a lot of competition. The runner up was probably Layton ;)

No, I don't trust him either, the guy's a bit too...hhhmmmm...well, past performance aside, he's a little too ready to milk whatever he can for press coverage.

The actress' name that comes to mind is Cathy Jones, but I think it was the other chick who played Marge: Princess Warrior.

When I lived in Ottawa (from 1980-1995) I worked for the federal government. I'm pretty sure I worked for every major department (except Taxation). I remember on at least 3 occasions running into Joe Clarke. Twice an an elevator, and once just strolling down some popular Ottawa downtown street. Although I'm an idealogical (ie mindless party follower) Liberal, I really liked Joe Clarke. I truly admire him for calling an election on a lame non-confidence vote due to high (minuscule at the time) gas prices. In person, he's pretty likable as well.

Charlie (Joe is taller than you think) Monoxide

Well, not very acurate, but it's Pepto... What the hell, I'll bite..

Hey Pepto: still better than having to chose between right and fascist, eh? ;)

Leave the Greenies out of this. They don't get but a handful of the vote. :p

I for one welcome the election as soon as possible. I hope that liberals will get decimated, like what happed to the NDP here in BC a few years ago. Sadly though, I think nothing will change because Ontario will once again vote liberal.
And just when I thought things couldn't get worse, I now hear Sven Robinson wants to run again.
