New target set for Rwanda deportations, it’s now a bet for £1000, Opposition parties attack Rishi Sunak over £1,000 Rwanda bet https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-68209330

What a horrid little man. Making a depraved bet that he can and will make vulnerable frightened people suffer and then canoodling with the Sinn Fein bod, not long after being seen getting close up and personal with Meloni of Italy at a far right rally.

Kwasi Kwarteng said "Yesterday I informed my Association Chair of my decision not to stand at the next General Election. It has been an honour to serve the residents of Spelthorne since 2010, and I shall continue to do so for the remainder of my time in Parliament."

I guess someone showed him the voting intention poll for his constituency.

Truss et al. calling themselves "Popular Conservatism" sounds like an open and shut case for the Advertising Standards Authority, at least as far as the "popular" bit goes...

To be fair I think a lot of the left liked them. If you have to have a Conservative party then a ******* bunch of delusional loons* who have no understanding of economics is high on the list of ones you would want to be your opposition.

*I appreciate a more nuanced description might be required to distinguish the ERG, Common Sense Group, New Conservatives, Cornerstone group, Hitler Youth and the Blue Collar Conservatives

I saw someone saying it was like calling themselves "enjoyable cystitis"

Apparently he was "taken by surprise" by Piers Morgan.

Should someone as easily bamboozled as this be leading the UK in these challenging times ?

Why doesn't Sunak just own up and admit he fell right into Piers Morgan's carefully laid trap? My impression of Sunak is that he is keen for people to like him and he knows that people are drawn to his easy affability and ready sense of humour. In his eagerness to be seen to be getting on like a house on fire with Moron he made a chump of himself. I understand from social media Moron gave him an easy time so I am guessing Sunak's office vetoed in advance any questions that were too challenging or critical of him. Piers Morgan is unbearably smug, supercilious and sanctimonious but one has to admire the way how, behind his painted smile, he owned Sunak as surely as sticking out his foot and tripping him up.

I’m vaguely amused that former senior ministers - and even a former PM - from a party that has been in power for 31 of the last 44 years are complaining bitterly that they’re not being allowed to get their message across.

James O'Brien was pretty good on this.

"He's not a betting man?!
He was a bloody hedge fund manager "

To be fair, hedging is protecting one's assets from losses. Sunak wasn't even hedging his bets when he took on Piers Morgan as the end result can only be win-win or lose-lose. Hedging would be betting against getting a plane full of asylum seekers off to Rwanda before the General Election with the consolation of winning £1,000 from Moron if you don't. Imagine the end result being not getting the plane off AND having to dish out £1,000 to Piers.

"Wharranirriot", as Benny Hill might have said.

Hedge as in 'hedge fund' is not simply hedging your bets. They do all sorts of investments not just arbitrage

Apparently there's 12 factions now. Maybe after the next election they could have an MP each.

We were talking about 'betting' and in the finance world that translates into futures and options. So Sunak does bet contrary to his claim he doesn't bet.

Oops.

Rishi Sunak told BBC Radio 5 Live this morning “I’m not a betting person and I was taken totally by surprise in the middle of that interview” after the fierce backlash to him appearing to accept a £1,000 bet over the success of the government’s Rwanda deportation scheme with broadcaster Piers Morgan.

Which is making it slightly awkward that lots of people have pointed out that in July last year he spoke on the BBC’s Test Match Special View from the Boundary podcast with Johnathan Agnew and explained how much he had enjoyed spread betting on cricket.
