Is it finally time to cut the ties between the US and France? Obviously, the hatred has grown to enormous levels culminating with the d-day commemoration. How long can the two nations pretend friendship on the surface? Am I being ridiculous? Maybe, but it seems that many citizens in both nations are not only in opposition, but are displaying outright hatred for the other. How long can this go on?

Well, it seems that relations were not warm to say the least. Why do our nations pretend to be amicable when they are not?

I thought you were referring to some event in particular (when you said "cumlulating in the D-day commemoration"), like perhaps a protest or politcal speach against the U.S.

I don' think France has been a close ally for a long time. (Remember, they also pulled out of NATO.) But, world politics does require a certain amount of decorum, even if its with countries that aren't quite the best of friends.

Yes. There are a lot of people in this world who hate each other because of their skin color, race, nationality, sexual preference.....

Fortunately, there are still a certain amount of people who don't care about other being french or american :)

Take care.

Elio.

Er, hatred?

Who, why, what, when, where, how?

The French government puts the country's interests first as does every other government. It doesn't seem any more underhand, hypocritical or dishonest than anybody else to me.

I agree. I think we should pull our ambassador out of Paris until the French bathe regularly and drop this thing they have for Jerry.

RR! I'm serious though. Why not come out and have a division in public?

I guess it just shows how points of view can vary.

I watched much of the build up to and actual D-day ceremonies etc and I saw no indication of any hostility. I would go so far as to say that I thought the whole thing was carried off in the correct spirit.

So I feel that it was a reminder, (IMO) that there is benefit to all from shared warmer relations.

Denise,
Like quit pretending that we are allies, when we clearly are not.

But what make you think that U.N. and France are not allies anymore ?

I also don't know what you're talking about. Sure they were opposed to and even tried to sink Bush's push to war in Iraq. But in many other respects the alliance is strong. Doesn't France have troops in Afganistan?

Many (most?) French people are angry with the US because of what they have done with respect to Iraq and the UN.

Some people in the US don't like the French people/government because they voiced their dissent.

I think "hatred" is a very irrational word, and probably does not apply here. Unless you're talking about the kind of people who would create the word "Freedom Fries"...

How many troops do they have?

Well, we could present the lend-lease bill. :D

According to this article, there are 200 French special forces troops working alongside U.S. forces looking for bin Laden. It doesn't say how many other French troops are in that country.

Also note that France is heavily involved in Djibouti, on the horn of Africa, along with U.S. troops, and are probably working to root out al Queda in Somalia.

France says the same thing that many Americans say. The war on terror is very important and worth fighting, and the war in Iraq is not the same thing (at least not until Bush's blundering made it so).
