Firefox - problems with JREF?

I have been using Firefox since it was released and it has remained extremely stable on my Windows PC. Recently I updated it to version 1.06 at about the same time as the forum went through its upgrade.

I now get regular crashes while browsing this forum, something I have never seen Firefox do before. So far it has only happened on this forum. Is this a Firefox problem or a JREF forum problem?

(it seems to happen when I hit the 'back' arrow several times in a row)

Anynone else notice this? I am upgrading to version 1.07 to see what effect that has.

Plenty of people use Firefox, I've used it a lot whilst I've been setting up the forum (normally I use the much superior Opera of course... :flamed: ) and not encountered any sign of instability with the forum and FireFox. There is nothing on the vBulletin site that indicates there is a problem. Have you checked all your plugins are compatiable with the latest release?

I use FF 1.0.7 on WinXP with no problems. I also had no problems when I used 1.0.6, but I don't recall for how long I used 1.0.6 with the new forum, if at all.

Yes, same problem here with FF 1.07 on Win XP-SP2: FF crashes from time to time, only when browsing this forum. Never seen this before. As Darat suggests, it can be a problem with an extension. Installed here:
  • BBCode 0.4.1.1
  • Web Developer 0.9.3
  • Statusbar Clock 1.7.1
  • Flashblock 1.3.2
  • NoScript 1.1.3.2
  • CustomizeGoogle 0.29
A priori they are all updated and compatible with the 1.07 version (I've tried FF 1.5 beta, but did uninstall it and revert to 1.07 precisely because of non compatibility of 1.5 beta with versions of some of these extensions).

In addition, for the first time I have seen total freezing of XP, when FF is running (this phenomenon is not specifically related to JREF Forum).

Alphaba, I don't have the same extensions as you but I already tried uninstalling all my extensions anyway - made no difference.

FF 1.07 seems to be better but not perfect.

PS - Mozilla recommend the following:

"Do not use both FlashBlock and NoScript together (NoScript includes Flash-blocking functionality)"

I have just followed the diagnostic recommendations on the Firefox site and I have finished a fresh install of 1.07. Haven't had any problems so far.

Maybe it was just a screwed up install?

You mean I'm using this sub optimal browser for no reason? ;)

You can go back to using your bloated feature-fest Opera now!
:D

Only joking, I'm quite fond of Opera myself. I use it when I'm on my linux box.

Great tip Oleron, thank you. I'll look forward if that makes a difference.

As for installation of FF, I've learned to be very cautious with the desintallation/installation process...

I'll try Opera again (did it when they proposed a free version with no adds for their 10th anniversary; but my hard disk did crash since then).

I've been running Firefox 1.0.6 on XP for some time now (about 4 months, from memory), and it has never crashed on me. Rock solid. Though I've had XP crash on me while I was doing other stuff and FF was quiet in the background (thanks, Paltalk...).

However an EARLIER version of FF (1.0.4) I installed did immediately start crash intermittently, on exactly the issue you outlined, Oleron - hitting back-arrows repeatedly. I managed to solve this...sorta! The problem seems to be something to do with the install and XP, because I repeated the install (did not uninstall), and it all went quite stable after that. I guess sometimes you gotta hammer that nail a few more times!

Zep - do you ever log in here from one of your old museum pieces? I'm asking because in the web-stats it shows someone whose OS is reported to be CPM?

I had daily crashes in Firefox 1.0.6 after the forum upgrade. I upgraded to 1.0.7 a couple of evenings ago and it's been stable since. IIRC it always crashed as I was diddling with the back/forward buttons.

I've been getting crashes with the fwd/back buttons as well.

Currently using Firefox 1.0.6 on XP Pro. Works like a champ.
At home I alternate between Firefox 1.0.7 on XP Home and 1.0.7 on Suse Linux 9.1. Works like a champ.

Opera's a good browser, I have nothing against it, I just personally prefer Firefox.

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051007 Debian/1.4.99+1.5beta2.dfsg-1 Firefox/1.4.1

works flawlessly here, if only I could get rid of the en-US and change it to en-GB.
Oh yeah, using Debain Gnu/Linux 'Etch'

I use FF 1.04 and have experienced zero problems with the new forum.

I have been slow to upgrade to latest version because last upgrade wiped out all my links. After some investigation I found out how to back thme up, but I'm lazy and haven't backed them up yet so I haven't upgraded yet either.

FF 1.0.7 with XP SP2 since, oh, ages, and no problems browsing this site. FF has almost never crashed on me.

Are you on a domain or just your own computer? Got a third-party firewall?

A theory--this only happens when I click repeatedly on the "back" or "forward" button--for all of you that haven't experienced it--are you more patient clickers than I am perhaps?
