• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

Firefox 0.9

Yes, it's a lot faster, so far. But I've heard a lot from various people about its stability. It went pear-shaped for me after two days. I should really have uninstalled all the other Phoenices/Firebirds/Firefoxes/Mozillas and so on that littered my hard drive, but I just installed over them. It's working better now.

I've also found that extensions can be troublesome. It does seem to work better if I restart the browser after installing each one, rather than installing a dozen, then restarting. But I guess that's partly my fault.

Cheers,
Rat.

Had fun and games when I first installed it.

First was a complete refusal to start - turned out to be a bad extension, but I manually had to delete files to do a complete uninstall.

Then problems with links from other programs, appears to be something to do with how it registers itself as the program for opening HTML etc. files.

However that's all sorted out now, and with TabBrowser Extensions and a few other bits and pieces installed it is superb.

I've now junked my Opera after being a long time Opera user and fan (still think that Opera is much better configured as a default). Handy really since I was having a lot of problems with Opera's latest version 7.5, crashes, incomplete page rendering and the like.

Only problem now is the silly size of the text entry box on posts here!

The silly text box size here is caused by Firefox behaving EXACTLY as requested by the HTML it receives. The JREF server recognises Firefox as a "Netscape" browser, and the default textbox width for "Netscape" is 40 chars. Firefox obliges precisely, if you check.

As for why this width value is chosen at all, though, I have no explanation... We have asked before that it be modified, but this mod was apparently deferred to after the arrival of the "new version" forum software. So we wait...

Just installed 0.9 myself...went in without a hitch and seems to be working perfectly so far.

Yes, it IS quicker - rendering engine improvements?

We'll see how it goes!

I upgraded a few days ago. Its behaved quite well for me.

Thanks to the extensions, I can view Java Applets, Flash, and everything I used to use IE for on Firefox.

I've even taken the time to download some of the miscellaneous extensions, the extension I really enjoy is called "Firesomething" by Cosmic Cat Creations.

Yea, Firesomething should be included by default. And don't forget to check out the extra pages from the Book of Mozilla that Firesomething installs.

I'm still waiting for Firefox .9 to be put into the Gentoo Portage tree. Until then, I can't get it...:(

They do warn you (but only if you go looking) to uninstall 0.8 before installing 0.9, and they promise upgrading will be fixed soon.

My 0.9 didn't find my 0.8 settings, and I got confused and ended up losing my bookmarks :(

My uninstall problem was with 0.9, although it says it has uninstalled itself it leaves lots of itself in the users application folder! So although I did an uninstall the corrupted extension wasn’t removed. Very annoying!

Loaded OK for me. Ported over my IE5 settings and other junk. Seems fine. I don't see any vast speed increase over IE5 though- in fact it may be a microtad slower.

Well, it will be slower to initially load than IE, that's for sure. IE is just an extension of the Windows shell, so it's already more or less loaded. That's also one of the reasons that IE is considered bad.

I have found that Firefox 0.9 renders faster than IE, though. Mind you, it's not loading ActiveX, and it's not loading Flash till I tell it to.

Cheers,
Rat.

Little bad point noted - if you allow it to carry over your URL history from FF 0.8 (the addy dropdown list), they get put in reverse order. Oh well.

I took the advice here and uninstalled 0.8 before installing 0.9 and everything worked fine.

It doesn't seem to run any faster than 0.8 on my machine. Also, is there any functional improvements/additions over the previous version? It all seems the same to me.

Seems very similar to me too - generally faster rendition, a few icon changes... Reckon it's had a heap of bug-fixes done?

I know the mozilla forums have been diligently collecting bug reports so I'd imagine there are numerous fixes in 0.9.

I had a problem in 0.8 - the browser would intermittently close down without warning. It would happen rarely and didn't seem to be related to any particular action, from what I noticed.

0.9 has been rock solid so far.:)

Rat- I mean it actually seems slower in operation than IE5, I expected the startup lag. The difference is small and varies from site to site- sometimes IE is slower.
In short no great difference. This is odd, because I used "Firebird" briefly and it was definitely quicker. May be something machine specific.
I don't see a killer advantage that would move me from IE5 full time. (I had several problems with IE6 and ditched it, which was a story in itself..)

It has hung twice so far trying to import my IE6 settings. It does appear to be somewhat faster than IE. I like the configuration options, except there doesn't appear to be a way to add a "Full Screen" button to the toolbar, and in full screen mode, there isn't some kind of progress bar or animation telling me that the page is still loading (like the little window icon in IE).

Works fine here. No earth shattering changes from 0.8 that I noticed.

Linux user since '98. What's an IE? ;)

Oooh, new mozilla....

"C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\searchplugins"

Looks like they re-installed the non-google search plugins I specifically cleared out (delete).

Ahh, now it'll quit switching the search page from what I use.

Another useful batch I have a desktop icon to (your path may vary):
@echo off
if exist "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Plugins\NPSWF32.dllxxx" goto Enable
:Disable
ren "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Plugins\NPSWF32.dll" NPSWF32.dllxxx
goto Exit
:Enable
ren "C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\Plugins\NPSWF32.dllxxx" NPSWF32.dll
:Exit

In advanced->software installation, be sure and clear "Enable software installation". This will put up a doohicky that you have to click *if you want to* download the the plugin.

What's it do? Turns shockwave off/on, so I'm not surprised by huge, obnoxious, noisy, animated advertisements.

Then there's always the hosts file stuff redirecting pop up and banner sites to localhost... but that wasn't changed.
