I've never seen it, having been put off by the nonsensical "box of chocolates" quote. Like there's ever been a box of chocolates that didn't include a picture and a description of each choccy on the lid or a card. Profound it clearly was not.

Same, actually. Simple, oblivious guy stumbles across various events and the humor is about how he doesn't understand the significance of any of them. Sure, he's kind-hearted and generous, but the film still just didn't connect with me.

To be sure- compared to far too many yanks- Forrest Gump WAS pretty smart..... (its not exactly a high bar for the populations of some red states after all)
He likely did seem pretty profound and knowledgeable to a good proportion of the public of those states....
