Did you see the movie White Noise?
I know one of the people in the trailer to the DVD. She has been recording her daughter for two years now. Her daughter died at age 20 three years ago. This is all very strange, but she has lots of people who will verify that they have heard her daughters voice on recordings and captured on the computer and on her answering machine. They have watched her tape record the questions to her daughter then upon play back, LOUD AND CLEAR is her daughters very articulate voice answering the question in a two or three word response.
Anyone else have any experience like this?
 
No, but I'm sure we would all be interested in more details of the recordings. Could you provide a .wav clip or a transcript, preferably one witnessed by an independent third party?

And of course, if this phenomena is repeatable, your friend could be line to win $1,000,000.

Well, mayday was all over the place about it a while ago.

Do you know how a tape recorder works? How do you suggest a spirit (assuming that you believe in spirits) can record its voice on tape? Why would you suggest a spirit would use this very complicated way of communicating when it would be much simpler (I can assure you) just to talk directly to people?

Are you aware just how easy it is to fake the event you describe?

No Hans I do not know how easy it would be for a spirit to
simply talk to people....how easy would it be?
Also- I know that if you don't use a brand new tape that there might be some stuff that didn't get erased on it....so yah, that wouldn't be good...but please, if you have some ideas on how this could be easily staged....great. I would love to hear it. My friend dose this for helping herself and others through grief...I was the one who suggested she try for the prize money, but I wrote to Randi and he seems to think its stupid too......so I quess until I here my own deceased daughter who died 7 years ago on tape,,,i will also remain a bit skeptical.....sadly
 
For all Skeptics ((like myself I suppose))

I don't want to send in the skeptics to squash her little recording cirlcle so no I won't provide anyone with the clip or website, but if you were really interested, I suppose you could just give it a go yourself. See what happens on play back...I jsut don't happen to own a tape recorder only a mp3 player and you need to use an external mic to avoid picking up a lot of junk....

You have had the effect explained to you in the other thread.

The brain tries to find patterns in random stimuli (shapes in clouds, voices in static etc.)

This has been faily thoroughly discussed and examined before - it doesn't seem to hold water in any way.

I'm sure if I sat for hours in a dark room listening to static then I would eventually hear something I could interpret as voices.
This does not mean it is spirits trying to communicate with us any more than my dressing gown is a masked killer when I see it dimly in the middle of the night.

It's very sad when people lose a loved one and they can often resort to extreme measures to try and keep that person and their memory 'alive' in some way.
But sometimes it just isn't healthy.

If you really are the sceptic you claim to be then read all the information about EVP and pareidolia (links have been provided in this thread )

But I'm sorry, if you think it is an area that deserves serious scientific research then you are very much in the minority.

Then how are we supposed to discuss how it happened? Another chance for understanding slips through our fingers.

And how will we know whether what we record is actually a spirit, or just one of the commonly known phenomena which are known to trick us?

People have been doing as you describe for a long time, and not one has provided any reason to believe that it's paranormal. How will one of us repeating the exercise with no further controls clear things up?

Didn't you post in the other forum that your friend was not 'frozen with grief' - I'll ask again here. How do you reconcile this with the fact that she is trying to communicate with her deceased daughter with an answering machine?

Do you honestly, and truly believe that the sounds on this web site are the voices of dead people?

Not that it's too hard to find examples on the internet.

Of course the big challenge is usually to listen to them before you read what you are supposed to hear. It's a lot harder that way round.

EVP to me is like crop circles - one of those things that I can't really understand how they get taken seriously by anyone (other than people who have undergone a recent tragedy) any more.

This person only records every two weeks, dosn't do it all the time, has lots of supportive people who seem to be acknowlegding the same contacts from this young woman...I don't have to believe it, I don't have to not beleive it...I was just pondering it....maybe you-all don't like to ponder...it makes life so much more familiar and controlable dosen't it?
 
If your friend picked up the voice on a regular tape recorder it is very unlikely it was actually her daughter, because the waves picked up on a tape recorder are of a low frequency and this is what the lower forms operate on (we are talking about the more sinister specimens, such as unrepentant murderers, those of ill intent, and even some of those not even human). These are the "pranksters" who will play games with you, and as represented in the Bible (I am not a Bible follower but there are still some very relevant things in the Bible) are going to do what they can to fool you and control you.
EVP's are very real, I have personally recorded them myself, but don't take the messages you hear at face value.
To speak with those on the higher levels, those who wish to have meaningful conversations, the "good" people who work to benefit mankind, is much more complicated. It has been done, however, as evidenced by the Spiricom Tapes ( www.spiricom.com ) These researchers actually carried on meaningful conversations with a deceased physics professor, who even helped them build their communication machine.

Skeptimaniacs will say...Oh, if they can communicate with you through a device why can't they just talk directly to you?
The deceased live in a different dimension from us, which is why it is as difficult for them to reach us as it is for us to reach them. When you die you aren't given superhuman powers, you are just the same you, only under different circumstances. Maybe one day science can figure this out. At least there are those actually working on it, rather than sitting around speculating who is a "woo woo". I guess if we relied on those types of people for our view of the world the earth would still be flat.:rolleyes:

I went to the web-site, listened to the samples and pondered. My conclusion is that it is a huuuuuuge stretch to hear what is said to be heard, and that was knowing ahead of time what I was supposed to hear.

And remember, hearing something is only half the battle. You then have to show that what you are hearing are the voices of the dead, rather than interference from a radio, cell phone, cordless phone, ham radio, television signal - not to mention fraud or trickery.

Why do you equate not agreeing that these things are the voices of the dead with not liking to ponder? If I was truly like that, would I have gone to the web-site and listened, or just dismissed you out of hand?

I like to ponder, but for me, pondering requires something to start it up. Most things I hear from believers are easily explained, and don't require a great deal of thought. One of the many reasons I struggle against woo-wooism is that I don't want my television time to be filled with their boring, uninspiring silliness. I stopped watching Sci-Fi for a while because they were showing those sorts of programs, non-stop, without bothering to eliminate the easily explainable. I would have much preferred that they showed actual sci-fi instead of sci-fi masquerading as reality.

If I started receiving apparent messages from something, I'd record them and hand the recording to a few people here to see if they noticed "anything unusual" without mentioning the content. If they don't see anything, I'd just assume it's just pareidolia on my part. If they perceived the same message, then I'd have something worth pondering.

No we love to ponder.

I have heard EVP before. I have a degree in Experimental Psychology in which perception was a large part. I haven't heard anything from EVP that isn't far more likely to be either our mind finding patterns in random 'pink noise' (it's not realy white noise), or vague radio broadcasts or fraud.

You'll notice that we have all already pondered this to the extent that we are aware of several sites about it, have read about the phenomena and understand the likely explanations.

I frankly take slight offense to your implication that I (or any of us) are in some way deliberately ignoring evidence towards some sort of paranormal phenomena because we prefer our lives comfortable.
I would personally find life a great deal more comfortable if I knew we endured after death.

You are clearly not particularly sceptical and seem slightly cross that we have provided perfectly mundane explanations for what you believe you have heard on your exciting little foray into EVP.

Why would you so like it to be real? I guess life is just that bit more exciting that way isn't it?

You know, this is the strawman argument that p*sses me off more than anything.

Mayday, you are ignorant, a liar, and a fraud.

If you ever bothered to spend more than a few hours studying the reality of science and scientific process, you would know this is, quite simply, untrue.

If you could grasp, just for a few nanoseconds, the reasons behind your own beliefs, you would realize this is false.

However, such analysis might take a small fraction of mental effort, and apparantly it takes far too much effort for you to form a coherent thought based on reason, logic, or evidence. Much easier to just "feel" what's true and accept whatever hogwash happens to be forced down your throat at the time.

Skeptics and scientists were the ones who discovered the Earth was not flat, and this was done long before the Middle Ages. It was precisely the "woo woos", the shamans and religious nuts and psychics and demon summoners of that time, who already had the answers. Those were the ones who had no further need to study or examine the world around them, because they had all the answers and could simply "commune with the spirits/read the tea leaves/half-arsed guess" the truth and spout it to the masses.

Skeptical thought has caused men to question long held beliefs and examine the evidence. This led to the discovery that the world was not flat. This lead to most of the advancements in science. You know, scinece, that thing that has advanced more in the last twenty years than mysticism has advanced in two thousand? Seriously, look at the claims of witches and psychics from two thousand years ago, and the only difference is the media (you know, the things technology provides). It used to be spirits writing on walls or in the dirt, now it's spirits writing on casette tapes. It used to be appiritions in dark alleys, now it's blurry infrared anomolies on cameras of questionable function. It used to be the laying on of hands...that one hasn't changed any.

Wake up and smell yourself. You can pretend to be high and mighty, above all of us obviously blinded skeptics if you want...but the truth is there, and all you need to find it is to follow the evidence.

Sometimes you can't even lead the horse to water.

Welcome back Maytroll.

The world has actually never been flat, it has always been spherical - it didn't suddenly stop being flat when we worked it out.

And I think you'll find it was people applying critical thinking and scientific methodology who actually discovered the true shape of the earth.

If we left it up to the likes of Spiricom researchers we'd all be convinced the earth was flat, sat upon 4 elephants and on top of a great turtle. All evidence to the contrary would be ignored simply because their theory was so much more exciting.
Anyone who doubted the turtle theory would be called 'closed minded' and preferring life 'familiar and controlable' with their silly spherical earth worldview.
Perhaps they would even be pitied.

Of course none of this would actually affect the real shape of the earth.

Both Martha, the women who picked up her daughters voice and myself and many others also know that there are pranksters on the other side..but even that is cool isn't it? I mean...dismiss it away if you wish,,,but just understanding that there is a force that exists after death is pretty amazing isn't it????? I won't bore you with why I think that is amazing and I must admit that it would be way nicer and more wonderful to connect with my daughter than a nit wit demon.....I still don't know what we are affraid of.....I don't like to live in fear, If we were affraid all the time then we wouln't have ever tinkered with electricity, undersea developement, outterspace exploration or transplant surgery.....and no incarnate entitiy has ever physicaly hurt someone in life or have they???? If you blelieve in the devil than you must also beleive in the good and why wouldnt' we have an equally good chance to commune with the Good if that were our pure intention.... tape recorders are just magnetic devices....but I understand what your saying about evolved vibrations not slowing down just to communicate with us....I really don't know much about how they do it...or even if it is real...I was taking Marthas word for it...but you say that you have recorded some EVP;s....like what for instance and how did that make you feel and what do you think of all of this? Do you have someone who died who you were hoping to contact?
