As I am very new to JREF Forum I expect to be throughly flamed on this thread but I am compelled to ask.

If one finds a web site that advocates say, child abuse or pedophilia, murder or sexual abuse of the weak, can one ethicly hack the site and attempt to take it down ?

This does not include sites that are merely offensive to my views, pornograhic, or are obvious frauds like MLM, religious sites seeking donations or sites that are merely looney.

I await the flames.

No you report any acidental finds to the proper authorties. You are not allowed to go looking for sites illegal sites whatever your intention.

ethical hacking generaly denotes hacking your own system to check it's security, but the government can "hack" into things and bring them down as they see fit. If you find one of the aforementioned sites, tell the athourities and let them deal with it.
(First amendment "free speech" does not encompass stuff that advocates violence, etc.)

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF FREE SPEECH!!!!!!!!!
If you have a problem with someone elses website, TOUGH, post a blog, make your own website, post something here, write an email to the author, if it is illeagel, report them to the government, but THE INTERNET IS A FREE MEDIUM, what you can say is pretty much unlimited, BUT SO IS WHAT THEY SAY.

I bet there are thousands of people who connect through a government licensed modem, through a government censored proxy and filter, AND THEY WOULD LOVE TO SO MUCH AS SEND AN EMAIL TO THE CREATOR OF ONE OF THESE SITES, MUCH LESS VIEW ONE OF THESE SITES, but YOU CAN DO THIS.

I bet you would LOVE to be "ethicly HACKED", wouldnt you!!! Did you know that PEOPLE create these websites because they WANT people to read it, if you have a problem with what they say, GREAT, DEAL WITH IT.

In the US there are no proper authorities as even directions for explosives and bombs, photos and addresses of targets and "Hate Speach" are protected.

Thanks for not calling me names.

There are authorities for reporting child porn to.

Personaly I see nothing wrong with instructions on how to make explosives and bombs.

Hacking isn't going to work anyway this type information circulated before the internet existed.

There are most certainly proper authorities for such nasty things as child porn. The other stuff, as vile as it may be, is covered under free speech statutes.

If certain instances of some class of thing is going to be illegal, then the line between those that are illegal and those that are not must be as thin and definite as possible, while still including all the stuff that should be illegal. Unfortunately, it's just not really easy to draw the thin line such that it cuts out that vile stuff that alot of us would like to not see while still leaving in all the good but controversial stuff that shouldn't be censored...

As far as hacking stuff goes - you'll never accomplish anything more than patting yourself on the back. Folks that go to those sites aren't going to care that you don't like them. If you disrupt one of their sites enough, they'll make another.

Actualy, the first amendment does protect a great deal of speech that advocates violence.

I truly love a good rant and I am not kidding. Your's was a work of art. The only issue I have is with the total caps thingys (thingies?). I honestly want to hear what a group of people, whom I have just discovered and am beginning to admire, think (can I get some help with the commas here?).

I can't be hacked in the sense you use because I don't have web site.

I have spent entirely too much time lately (I admit it) exploring what I call the dark side of the net. My wife and daughter think I am tilting at windmills. A number of these wackos are well organized and very slick. As many have pointed out, if you try to post to their sites, you are booted off.

I should have enabled a poll.

I am tired and since I'm alreay in bed, I'm out t a a h e r e zzzzzz z z z

Even in the USA you don't have a completely free rein when it comes to saying things to other people. Notably, just this week someone was arrested for trying to persuade people to kill themselves and others. So if you come across a site that is inciting other people to commit a crime, notify your local police. If that fails, tell the FBI. Hacking it yourself is an illegal act in itself.

I understand Your frustration. There are law organizations that have special departments to deal with child abuse and fraud, I don't know where You are in My stat (Florida) we have the Florida department of law enforcement (FDLE ) that tracks and governs these kind of things. Clearwater Fl has one of the most successful programs in law enforcement in dealing with pedophiles on line.

I belong to a few groups that monitor these kinds of activities. P2P is the new monster on the block, but people can hack >coff coff< and bring down sites thru illegal means . I.E. anything from Massive DOS attacks to hacking the site and gaining admin status and doing -God knows what!
I don't advocate doing any thing illegal so watch your step and involve the authorities ASAP.
Good luck.

They're right. There's very little to be served and a whole lot to lose by crafting yourself into a cyber-vigilante. Even if you were successful, the best possible outcome is that you inconvenience them slightly.

What if what they are doing isn't illegal? There are lots of sites out there that hire young-looking women to ape being younger.

What if there is an investigation ongoing, and your activities screw it up?

What if the "bad guys" trace you somehow and target you?

What if there is an investigation tracking access to the site, and you get on the list? Is that a brush you want to be tarred with?

I felt the same way when my daughter was born- I wanted to right all the wrongs in the world for her. Unfortunately (or should that be fortunately ;)) I haven't the power to alter basic human nature, and you aren't going to clear out "the dark side of the net" until you can eliminate the pain, humiliation, frustration, loneliness and need from the human beings that create and feed it.

Do what you can to make the world in your neck of the woods a better place for her. And warn her about, but don't unecessarily frighten her with, the darkness.

Welcome to the forum. :)
