Fire fighting is not a profession. It is a lifestyle choice. One might even call fire fighters a sub-culture unto themselves, with their own ceremonial beghaviors, their own set of values that run counter to or exaggerate in some way the nroms of their society. I would expect a German to more easily understand this than an American. We do not give our fire fighters anything like the aura of nobility that Germany does, nor are our fire departments so central to civic pride. The steel is symbolic of one of the most traumatic events to have ever effected the lives of thousands of fire fighters. The steel is being used to commemorate what they lost and should be transported in a manner which illustrates the impact that that event had on their lives.
