Erdogan bans Twitter

Any evidence to support the notion that the UK will be banning social media any time soon ?

If the "so totally not china-style censorship" of the opt-in filter (AFAIK, "esoteric" material is blocked) doesn't sound ominous, I don't know what does.

How about "Say, that's a pretty wife you have there. Would be a shame if something were to happen to her down some dark alley!"?

That to me would sound ominous.

The stuff about "opt-in" "so-totally not chinese" "esoteric" whatjamacallit not so much.

Basically, the British government is using "PORN!" as an excuse to censor legal material (i.e. you have to phone your isp to access porn and get put on a government watchlist). I'm sure that a future government would be likely to add "politically inappropriate" material to that filter as well. After all, "esoteric" material is going to be covered under the opt-in system as well.

A ban doesn't even work in Turkey. How do you think it would work here? Furthermore, can you imagine any government surviving an attempt to exert this sort of control?

No, thought not. This is nonsense for the CT sub-forum.

What the hell just happened? I opened this thread expecting news on Turkey.

Damn thing turned so hard... my neck hurts. :(

Whiplash I say! You, Sir... shall hear from my solicitors. :D

If you think about it, they will soon put barcodes on the backs of our necks, because they are already on the boxes our iPhones come in. I mean, that is the only logical conclusion.

Cue: Where.Did.That.Come.From?

I know. Wouldn't it be easier to just start a thread on the inequity of having to dial up for porn?

Considering that the British government has been torturing people in the past few years and had been running a near panopticon system, I think the whole "let's censor the internet!" carries a lot of disturbing precedents.

Me too. Class action. What are you playing at, OP?

Erdoğan is an arse who cannot take any criticism at all. He was scathing about social media during Gezi Park protests last year. This has come following coruption allegations at himself and party members. With nationwide municipal elections in full swing he probably feels an extra need to take action.

The good news is that Twitter is fighting back:

Twitter has taken action against the Turkish government’s blocking of access to it and hired a lawyer expert in litigations related to cyberlaw.

Lawyer Gönenç Gürkaynak has confirmed that he was meeting with officials from Turkey’s Telecommunications Authority (TİB) in Ankara on behalf of Tweeter, adding that discussions for finding a legal solution were ongoing.

In the past, Gürkaynak had worked on the legal case against the ban on YouTube.

Meanwhile, The Union of Turkish Bar Associations (TBB) filed a petition March 21 to an Istanbul court for the lifting of the ban.

A touch hyperbolic IMO.

I think it's fairer to say that the UK has been complicit in torture but if you have evidence of UK government sanctioned torture taking place, I'm all ears.

If you think that the government has run a "near panopticon" system, your definition of near is quite different to most people's.

I'm unhappy with the "opt in for pron" system but I can appreciate why such steps have been taken, especially with mobile devices. If you have evidence that people end up on watch lists by opting in for all internet content and end up having action taken against them purely on this basis then please present it - not least because I've opted in for the "full" internet on principle.
