'Environmentally friendly' scepticism

Thanks for pointing me to this thread. Is anybody familiar with Solar Tower/Chimney?

I love the idea of this. Obviously, it has its limitations needing a place with a lot of sun and although its not very efficient, construction is fairly cheap.
Interesting.

However it does seem to me like quite a lot of construction for not a great deal of energy return. They mention in that article proposed collectors of up to 7km across and chimneys 1000m high. I suppose it could be useful in areas like where there was lots of sun and little use for large tracts of land, but the relatively low yield I think would be a concern especially with the ongoing cost of turbine maintenance.
