Emily Rosa

Now that we have MySpace, people can be haunted by their adolescent indiscretions forever!

An interesting problem. I suspect that we need to be able to remake ourselves - something that's harder to do now that any of us can make ourselves a public figure.

I have to admit that I also assumed, when I saw Emily Rosa's name, that she must have an interesting story to tell us about the use she has made of her auspicious start. Now I'm curious as to what it was that she was expected to talk about.

I will reserve comment on the MySpace issue for the moment. Is there any precedence for a speaker bringing a spouse at TAM expense?

CT

I don't know about TAM, but it isn't something I've seen happen at other conferences where I'm familiar with speaker arrangements (medical and weaving). Some conferences don't even cover all the costs for the speaker, especially if he/she is not doing a major presentation. The best I've seen is allowing a speaker to upgrade to accomodations that can be shared or allowing a spouse the discounted rates made available to conference attendees. I don't think I've ever seen someone given a free conference registration - it would be a huge deal to pay one speaker $425 more than the rest of the speakers.

I only saw one critical comment posted, and it was quickly defended by several other commenters. But she did seem upset that people were discussing her here, so maybe that prompted it.

Also: what Miss Kitt said.

I've only ever been heavily involved with one conference, which had two main speakers- the Beley Lecturer on the Friday and the after-dinner speaker on the Saturday. The after-dinner speaker was a big name, and had his hotel, registration and first-class ticket from England paid for (big bucks). The Beley lecturer (me) got to spend his nights on the main organizer's spare bed for free, but still paid registration fees and air fare.

I feel more and more cheated every time I relate that story.

Cool. I hope she finds the forum interesting enough to join in. I would suggest though that people badgering her about why she declined to speak at TAM would be counterproductive. Let's just welcome her as a member, eh?

Please cut out the bickering and personal comments.

If Emily Rosa was to come to a TAM, I would enjoy listening to her on a panel discussion; I would also be interested in what she's currently doing now.

Her opinions on Best Chocolate at TAM 2009 would also be appreciated.

Emily was advised not to read what's been written here. I can see why now. I will advise the same.

As for the issue of whether Em canceled or ever accepted a speaking gig, take that up with JREF, if you think it's your business.

While Em adores Randi, Michael Shermer and Pat Linse, she lived through years of her and her family being harassed by a nasty clique of skeptics (please don't ask for details). So I'm not surprised she wanted a friend to accompany her to TAM7. She is anything but a timid traveler.

As for the photo...she's a belly dancer.

A Wikipedia page has gone up on "Emily Rosa" recently which might answer some questions raised here.

Oh, I get it. She would have needed a bodyguard at TAM to protect her from all of the nasty skeptics who would have tried to do who knows what. R . . . . I . . . .G . . . H . . .T

I would also point out protection from cliques of nasty skeptics was not mentioned on the now defunct Myspace page. Instead this was what Emily Rosa (assuming it was really her) had to say:

Young women should not be expected to travel alone, sorry!

Nothing about the particular issues mentioned by LindaRosaRN.

Come on folks. Let's give Emily and her mom some slack. There's plenty of sCAMers out there that warrent our derision, lets not attack those who have done great work fighting them.

Agreed.

Thanks Linda, for making a comment here. I hope the comments here have not coloured your, or Emily's, opinion of skeptics in general. We are, after all, only human, and subject to human foibles. I offer my personal apologies for anything said here that might be construed as offensive.

Emily seems to be an intelligent young woman. Being a skeptic, I am reserving judgment until I meet her or read her writings.

Incidentally, I was a skepchick in the original Skepchick calendar in 1990s. I believe Emily was in that calendar as well!
