Earthquake!!!

I was in the shower and didn't feel it, but my son did, his computer monitor and tv stand started to vibrate.

I chatted with a friend who was working with a transmission electron microscope during my first earthquake (on the phone with Grandpa while chatting with a biologist--it got weird). Apparently TEMs don't like to be shaken. Especially not on the 9th floor.

Flet it while teaching a class in Merrimack, NH. Although, for me, I was more interested in reading about Alpha Centauri Bb than the earthquacke (or the Presidential debates).

vibration

I guess we just had a (preliminary) 4.5 earthquake in Maine. I'm practicing my guitar and the whole house shook.

Let's see...4.0 earthquake + 0.5 guitar quake.

Mag 4, really?
Here in Christchurch, we eat 4's for breakfast, lunch AND tea, and even the occasional 5 for supper!:D
Over the last 2 years, we have had more than 10'000 recorded aftershocks, one of them, unfortunately, deadly:(
On the list of the top 100, the SMALLEST is a 4.7!
seriously though, I hope you don't get anything bigger, because they can be bloody scary!:(

In Montreal, I heard a BOOM, then the apartment vibrated. A bag of chips fell off the shelf.

I don't know why I woke up in time to hear the boom though. Is there something that preceeds the sound waves?

Yeah. The waves through the Earth all travel considerably faster than air waves do, so you would have encountered them before the sound. If they were powerful enough to shake you then that's your answer.
