Dragon Con 2014

Additional item on the Star Party - you can attend from home!

We're going to have a "virtual star party" during the event using Google Hangouts on Air. This will start at 10 PM Eastern US time on Thursday (02:00 UTC Friday). We'll have several astronomers talking about their work, and possibly some live telescope views. Some of the guests here in Atlanta will hop on.

You can view the invite and mark yourself as attending on Google Plus, or simply open the YouTube box below at the appropriate time and watch right here in the thread. (Right now it just shows a countdown timer to the event).

If we watch from home, is the harassment policy still in effect?

As usual, I had a great con. Got some autographs from Colin Baker, Tom Savini, Larry Niven, and Harry Turtledove. I also drank way too much and hung out with people I hardly ever get to see anymore.

There seemed to be some issues with line management early on, but by and large they did a pretty good job with crowd control this year. People moved fairly swiftly, though I'm sure there were as many as (if not more than) last year.

The dealer's room building was kinda overwhelming, though. Apparently next year they're moving it to a different building in the AmericasMart complex, so maybe that'll help some.

WB - it was good seeing you, it's been a few years.

Will we get to see a pic of the T1000 costume? - I'm intrigued
Yes, I'll post some photos later.

I will not be attending.

Are you sure? I could have sworn you were there... or maybe it was only someone cosplaying as you. I'll post a photo of "you" later, and you can let me know.

I got Joel Hogson, Colin Baker, and Jeri Ryan, among a few others.

Joel Hogson does seem to be putting in a much stronger effort to meet his fans, these days.

Jerri Ryan liked my T1000 costume. She took a photo of it, though I haven't seen her post it on social media, yet.

I didn't drink anything... other than soft drinks. But, I also had a good time with great folks.

Though, I stayed in the filk and live performance-related tracks much more than the skeptic and science tracks.

I think more skepics and humanistic folks should check out the filk music more often. Sometimes there is a good amount of skeptical stuff subversively stuffed into there!

I heard there were 10,000 more people this year, than last year. But, it didn't feel that much larger... except those few hours when it was raining and the pedestrian tubes were jammed up.

Good seeing you, too! Unfortunately, I get so much skeptical stuff from other places, I don't spend all that much time at the SkepTrack

The Star Party seemed to have lower attendance this year. But, it was still a good party!

Other highlights include:
  • Arthur Dent's HHGG Party, with awesome HHGG related costumes and hoopy fans!
  • The HHGG Discussion Panel. I kinda blew up a bit when.... that particular book we don't talk about.... was mentioned. And, I do apologize for that. But, it was still a fun and interesting panel discussion.
  • Puppet Improv was hilarious! Even the kids' one was great! (I didn't get to see the puppet slams. One, apparently, was waaay off location. The other I somehow missed, and didn't know about it until it was almost over.)
  • Beakman's World Live! Yes, there was Paul Zaloom in character as Beakman, making a mess of the place while doing science demonstrations!

It's over. D: I had a lot of fun as usual, but I didn't wind up getting to any skeptic track panels this year. Wowbagger, I believe I saw you in your Spaceman Spiff costume. I would have said hi, but I was in a hurry to get to an MTG draft.

What day was that? If it was Sunday, it was probably most likely me.

If it was Friday, that was someone else!

Yeah, there was another Spiff costume at DC, this year. And, it was hanging out in the science/skeptical region for a while on Friday.

My costume schedule was:
Thurs: No costume, unless "cocktail-like attire" for the Star Party counts, since I don't usually dress like that.

Friday: I only wore the T1000 costume for a few hours on this day, as parts of it started coming apart too easily, between about 12:30 PM and 4:30 PM.

I wore my Arthur Dent "costume" for the HHGG party that evening.

Saturday: Newly re-inforced and re-engineered T1000 costume, for the whole freakin' day! 9 AM to 3 AM the next morning, or thereabouts.

Sunday: Spaceman Spiff for almost the whole day. I put it on after my initial run through the dealer's rooms, which was about an hour or two after they opened. And, it stayed on until 3 AM or so.

Monday: No costume. But, I did wear one of Sharon Hill's "Doubtful News" T-shirts, at least.

Sunday and just outside the Skeptic Track room talking to someone at around 8ish. Nice costume BTW (I love C&H). I ran into a plain Calvin costume on the elevator right after that too.

Some photos of the T1000 Liquid Metal Terminator costume.

The lighter-background one was a scan of my Hallway Contest photo, which shows off my knife arm a little better.

The other is more detailed. You can see the bullet holes easier, for example. Though, the knife arm is at an odd angle. A photo of John Connor is on the ground. I was asking folks, every now and then, if they've seen him anywhere.

Also note, in either photo, the poking finger and the floor patterned boot.

I wondered how you'd portray the character - I like the way you've done it there. For the boot is that something I missed in the film, or a way of showing part way through a transformation?

That's not a knife, it's aluminum foil.

The extended edition of the film has short shot of the T1000's feet inadvertently melding into a metalic floor, shortly after the liquid nitrogen incident.

The original theatrical version of the movie cut that bit out, for some reason, along with a few other such "glitching" shots.

But, even if you didn't know that, you can still pretend it's artifact of him rising up out of a floor, or something, a short time ago.

It's actually poster paper covered with a silver decorative wrapping sheet. Not aluminum.

I didn't use any aluminum foil on this costume. (Though, I almost did.)

The finger is actually a turkey baster wrapped in sliver plumbing tape, and the rubber squeezing end removed.

The bullet holes were actually made of clay and painted silver. (If I had more time, I would have made them from rubber, somehow.) They are stuck on with hot glue. The larger ones are partly glued to card paper backings through holes in the shirt. (Which was not the case on Friday.)

The silver boot has an old rubber mat on its end, that happened to have that diamond pattern on it. And, it was painted silver, along with the boot. Originally, it was hot glued on, with only a small amount of tape around the sides. Later on, I taped it down even more with a couple of layers of both duct tape (for strength and flexability) and plumbing tape (for shinyness).

Not clearly seen in the photos is a silver painted water gun, in the gun holster. I had it permanently glued into the holster, partly because it was too small to actually stay in there on its own.

Not shown in the photo: I had an unpainted police radio replica on the back of the belt. (The script for T2 actually specified that the T1000 carried a real police radio with him much of the time.)

By the way, it is facinating how hard it can be to find a somewhat realistic looking police uniform costume. I needed one with long sleeves. Most adult police costumes have either short sleeves... or no sleeves at all.

Given that Americans have relatively easy access to weapons and you needed a uniform with several bullet holes there was one obvious solution ;)

One highlight I forgot to list:

  • Ignite presentations at SkepTrack. This took place on Monday, but they hope to do it when there are more people around next year.

Attached are a couple more photos of my costume. These were taken by Tom Mundell of PixelatedImages.com.
