But this supposes that the Tea Party wing of the GOP will go gently into that good night in the event of such an election defeat. I suspect the opposite outcome, that it would instead rage against the dying of the light. It would conclude that it must try even harder to get its message across and become even more strident and partisan.

This also assumes they're headed to an "ass-handing" election this fall.

For that matter, history shows that those who love huge spending and tax increases get their ass handed to them, and it doesn't slow them down much. Why would it slow down the "other side"?

When I participated in the Indiana Youth in Government program, I remember a speech given by a young senator who had formerly been the well-regarded mayor of Indianapolis . I was impressed by his intelligence ability to find connections about major issues of the day and to weave them together into a coherent narrative. The senator was not Dan Quayle.

I hope some of them are saying that they should have stuck with Richard Lugar. He wasn't Mr. Charisma, but he did a bunch of heavy lifting on the issue of keeping nuclear weapons secure. He was also very level-headed. MOO.

See the bolded part. That's exactly why he was thrown out. He had the nerve to do things like vote for Obama's supreme court nominations. I'm serious, that was among the attacks that were leveled at him by Mourdock.

You are right, he was level-headed and was willing to work with Obama, because he knew that is what needed to be done to govern. But that was exactly why the right didn't like him.

As a result, they got Joe Donnelly.

You have to wonder if Richard Luger, in the privacy of his home, is not having a little bit of schandefrunde over Mourdock losing the election yesterday. He would not be human if he did'nt get a little smile out of it.

As an Indiana resident who was aggravated by the accusations lobbied at Richard Lugar for having the gall to work across the aisle to get things done, I feel we really dodged a bullet when Mourdock was defeated.

Parts of "Hoosiers" were filmed not far from Wabash College (my alma mater), which was mentioned in the film. Hoosiers love their high school basketball, but some love their college hoops, as well. I was hiking with a fellow alum who said we should get back soon, lest we miss the Indiana University game. "What time does it start?" I asked. "6:12."

Well, I think it's safe to say that Hoosiers love themselves some basketball. I figured that kid from French Lick would go to the college ranks, but he just loves any version of the game and stayed with the pros. (Bill Murray: "Larry's not white. He's transparent.")

Considering that he publicly refused to endorse Mourdock, I think he let out a hardy guffaw. Donnelly is a conservadem -- I'd bet dollars to donuts that Lugar voted for him.

Did you hear Dick Lugar's comments after he lost to Mourdock?

They were like, "I sure hope he goes to Washington with an attitude of trying to work with the other side. There are things that have to get done in government, and the only way to do it is to work with others."

The important point is that he was talking from decades of experience. He knows you can't just hold your breath in a tantrum. Governing is about give and take.

He was implicitly addressing those attacks from Mourdock about how he agreed too much with Obama. He was pointing out that it is what you need to do to govern.

It's just too bad for republicans he couldn't get that message through during the primaries.

Donnelly is a conservadem -- I'd bet dollars to donuts that Lugar voted for him.

But...but...but I thought Donnelly was an evil liberal? That's what Mourdock told me. I mean, Donnelly voted for ObamaCare! He even voted the same as Nancy Pelosi!!!!!!
