I'm not so sure. I think the people who read this and believe it may fit that profile, but I suspect the author is a bit more cynical and simply trying to manipulate those prone to believe this crap.

That story is totally made up. It doesn't even have the most basic facts straight. First of all the United Federation of Teachers (I'm a member) does not fundraise door-to-door and the liar who made up this steaming pile doesn't even know that Freeport and Central Islip aren't even in NYC!

I would encourage you to read chapters 3 & 4 of Thomas Frank's "The Wrecking Crew" which helps to put these e-mail forward campaigns into historical perspective.
