Just a FYI here, the best book I have ever read regarding our involvement in the Soviet/Afghanistan conflict was Charley Wilsons' War by George Crile . It may not be the most in-depth and scholary work, but it does show how things work (or don't work) in Washington DC, and how a conspiracy (to keep the aid to the Afghans quiet from other parts of the US Government) really works--small numbers of people involved and nothing spectacular.

Very good read.
