Andrew Cuomo conceded in the democratic primary for NYC. The winner was Zohran Mamdami.

Cuomo was infamous for having a sexual harassment scandal when was Governor of New York state that led to his resignation. Despite this he tried to make a comeback by running for mayor of a city he does not live in.

Cuomo got a lot of endorsements despite his scandal, including the New York Times, Bill Clinton and many more. Mamdami secured endorsements of more progressive democrats like AOC, but couldn't match Cuomo's war chest. Despite this he still won the primary.

Mamdami will likely face off against incumbent Adams, who is now running as an Independent.

... and against Cuomo running as an Independent.
This is going to get extremely ugly, with the entire establishment uniting to prevent Mamdami from winning.

I thought Cuomo's base was in Albino, I mean, Albany.

This will indeed be a battle between what the Democrats need to be going forward and the two candidates from the same old neocon uniparty.

I looked over some social media and while I am not near enough to NYC to confirm the general vibe I am seeing is: "Turns out, running a campaign appealing to city-fearing suburbanites who moved out decades ago doesn't actually work well in the actual city."

Seems to me like they're doing the opposite of uniting. Two pseudo-Democratic establishment candidates running against Mamdani is bound to split the pro-corruption vote. (The Democratic primary in NYC uses rank-choice voting, but the general election does not.)

I would not be surprised if Cuomo doesn't run a serious campaign on his "Fight and Deliver" party line. This was a pretty big upset--Cuomo was projected to win as recently as three days ago. A simulation from a couple of days ago showed Mamdani losing the first round and squeaking by with a 52-48 victory after something like five rounds of vote counting. In the end he trounced Cuomo on the first round of voting.

As Mamdani gets more attention Cuomo's one advantage--name recognition--will be less important.

There's that, but in general I would say Cuomo barely campaigned at all. He just kind of expected to win on the strength of his name. I think that air of entitlement has something to do with why New Yorkers turned against him.

It's great that turd Cuomo lost but Mamdani is likely to be a disaster. He's going to freeze the rent and increase the supply of affordable housing? The former will ensure that nobody wants to build multifamily rentals in NYC, which means you can forget about any increased supply. Worse still is his proposed solution for food price inflation:

As Mayor, Zohran will create a network of city-owned grocery stores focused on keeping prices low, not making a profit. Without having to pay rent or property taxes, they will reduce overhead and pass on savings to shoppers.
No surprise a Democratic Socialist would suggest putting the government into competition with the private sector, but it is refreshing to see him admit that the reason it would succeed was because of unfair advantages (no rent or property taxes).

It’s unclear what makes any of this a “disaster” as opposed to ideas that you don’t like and aren’t convinced will work.

The proposed rent freeze is for rent-stabilized buildings only, so isn't likely to deter developers from building new stock, particularly if they're incentivized to do so (new construction can include rent-stabilized units for a tax incentives, but don't have to).

So it's going to be a disastrous success?

Non-profit food co-ops also enjoy "unfair advantages" over commercial grocery stores, by virtue of being exempt from state taxes. Doesn't strike me as a good reason not to have them. It's unlikely that gub'mint grocery stores are going to be in direct competition with existing chains, as they'll likely be focused on food deserts first--dealing with market failures rather than trying to replace private businesses. I doubt we're going to have 100 locations anytime soon, let alone 10,000. Hell, I'm skeptical we'll have one.

It's worth considering that the mayor has limited power to implement big ideas like this. Any tax increase has to go through the state, and the most likely outcome is the state tells him no. Mayor of NYC is one of the worst jobs in US politics--everyone hates you, you have little hard power, and it's notoriously dead-end.

Oh good, now a Socialist will run on the Democrat ticket, Adams will run as an Independent.....which will split the Dem vote, and crazy man Curtis Sliwa will win the election.

Nah. Adams beat Sliwa 67-28 in 2021. You could evenly split the vote and he still wouldn't win.

Polymarket currently has a Mamdani win at 72%, Adams at 21%, Cuomo at 5%, and Sliwa at 2%.

While it's a nice idea in a vacuum, the disaster will be the hundreds (more?) of local grocers it drives out of business.

There's certainly no easy solution, I just think this one isn't viable in the city, which isn't a "food desert", just expensive.

Trump won 30% of NYC in 2024.

Split the other 70% three ways, and Sliwa has a real shot. Especially if he wears a suit and ditches the beret.

Yes, if you make a series of unrealistic assumptions this could happen, but you're treating a remote possibility as a certainty, which is just foolish.

I don't think it's guaranteed that Sliwa would win against Adams, Cuomo and the DSA guy, but he will definitely have a Fighting Chance. The general election for New York city mayor race does not have ranked voting

No, he won't. He's a perennial also-ran candidate. There's a non-zero chance the GOP will force him off the ballot in favor of Adams.
