Cryptomundo Incorporated formed

In Coleman's defense, I also doubted "raccoon" for this one on initial inspection, and I've had Vert Morph, Mammalogy - heck I even taught Mammalogy one semester!

I guess the lesson is not to assume that potentially relevant training necessarily leads one to the correct conclusion. When we learn the distinguishing characteristics of canids and procyonids, for example, we don't train on specimens (or photos of specimens) that are shaved and presented without context. You won't find a dead, naked raccoon in the Peterson Field Guide to Mammals, and you won't find a dead Mexican hairless dog or a mangy coyote either.

Another problem is that people who've spent a lot of time looking at animals could have a very different sense of the variability that a specimen can present than folks who haven't invested that time. I know I got hung up on the feet. In retrospect, they're totally obvious as raccoon. On initial inspection, however, I was willing to allow that some dogs' feet, photographed at a weird angle, might resemble the feet in the photo. I was completely wrong, but that's what I was reasoning at the time.

So if Coleman deserves some abuse for this one, it would be because he whipped up excitement about this being something "crypto" or persisted in writing that it was something else after it was very clearly determined to be a raccoon. Otherwise, this is just another example of how an appeal to authority can be a logical fallacy.

Not to mention the whole tendency towards revisionist history.

Where would history be without a little revisionism/creative liberty
Though some history needs a little debate here and there.
I want to revise all these cryptoids. Especially the rare ones.

To add: I wonder if Obama could be impeached if he claimed he saw something funny in the Bushes.

He doesn't ever learn from these pronouncements. Repeats the same mistake over and over.

Also, what's with all the hairless things? Have they always been around and only now get press (because they are freaky) or is there a scourge of mange? (This poor thing looks like he was always hairless, not mangey.)

Yeah, it seems that this one does not have mange. Another local news article with good video.

Researchers suspect the hairlessness is due to a congenital defect, not disease. Game warden Penny Nixon wants to emphasize that point. "This is just an anomaly of a common species," she said. "We don't want anyone alarmed by it. We don't want people to think we have a mange problem or any kind of problem in our wildlife in Wise County."

Ah. Poor guy. At least he was living in the south.

Even humans have this condition occasionally. Forget what it's called. Don't feel like googling...

Alopecia?

I know that this chupacabra didn't have mange, but many of them seem to, poor things. You can't really blame them for sucking the occasional goat.

If you're refering to mange and not whatever Mr. Life After Davey Crockett's Hat had there, in humans mange is called demodicosis.

I don't get the 'allure' of Loren Coleman even a little. He's a fortean-addicted-wannabe-Bigfoot-hack-in-a-rush-to-go-nowhere. "We're in Psychoville and Coleman's the mayor!" IMO he's not funny, he's not clever and he's not as relevant as he's depicted. At least Biscardi is obvious with the "Hey, I might be a stupid ******, but isn't it fun?" With Coleman, I don't think I've ever got any pleasure from anything he's ever said or written. And it might be just me.

Oh boy, this should be fun...

Breaking: Living Ivory-Billed Woodpecker Photographed!

On December 29, 2009, Daniel Rainsong found and photographically documented a living Ivory-Billed Woodpecker in the southern Sabine River basin. The bird was again spotted and photographed a second time, later.

Daniel Rainsong now has photographs to prove this new sighting. The photographs proving this new find are being sequestered to protect Mr. Rainsong’s right of claim in this discovery. After Mr. Rainsong’s rights in this discovery have been established and protected, the photographs will then be released to the public.

Be prepared for a let down.

...Keep the emails coming, but don't know if I'll have much more to say before Monday... assuming the story even lasts that long (...am finding more strange interconnections as I research this thing, but not sure what will be worth reporting on). [ NOTE: based on more I've uncovered, but not comfortable reporting, I'll raise the above likelihood of multiple-person hoax to 99.8% now ]

-- More Dribs and Drabs --
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

[ lot of extra traffic coming in today, for obvious reasons... newbies can read posts (on Daniel Rainsong claim) backwards from here or go to Jan 19, if you wish to start at beginning and read up...]

As far as I can tell the very earliest Rainsong began his search is Dec. 18 (or a day or two later); doesn't appear to have involved a great deal of advance planning, and not clear to me how he selected the specific area he would search. And then 11 days later he finds and photographs an Ivory-bill... hmmmm, nice piece of work!! The press release came out on Jan. 19, saying Rainsong searched for 30 days, implying the news release came immediately upon completion of said search (feasible). No details yet on exactly what Rainsong did between Dec. 29 and and Jan. 18 (continued searching same area, adjacent areas, tried to get video, contacted key people, etc.???) [NOTE: commenter below finds indication that expedition was originally only scheduled to go from Dec. 21 to Jan 3 ]
Last I heard, Jerry Jackson has not seen pics nor been in contact with Rainsong, though others on the press list have.
And I can only reiterate that nothing coming in to me thus far lends me any confidence in these claims at all, while there is plenty to be leery of.

Be prepared for a let down.
Hmm, Cornell have been searching for 5 years and seen nowt, then this guy shoots it after only a fortnight in the area? In fact, Cornell apparently has discontinued the search as at October 2009.

A number of blogs (here, here) are mighty sceptical and even hinting hoax. There is a US$50K reward for a photo/video leading to an actual bird, Rainsong apparently advertised for a "photographer and travel-assistant" and offered $1K for the job, hinting at a $10K reward from Iowa State University.

It may be a fun ride.

ETA - too slow on the posting!

Hepperle sounds like an idiot. He adds no credibility and probably scores negative points for that aspect.

It looks like we do have Patterson/Gimlin with John Green mouthpiece all over again.
