CPU Pin troubles

Often when you change CPU, the BIOS will reset things like FSB speed back to the minimum. Check that the BIOS is reporting the right CPU and bus speeds.

I got a new motherboard and video card as well. I needed them 'cos I was still on AGP and socket A.

Can the FSB speed still be back to the minimum if the motherboard is new as well? How do I set it to the right speed?

Video card settings? Like, not using hardware acceleration? Sounds like something like that. Maybe.

Windows XP?

Right-click the desktop, Properties, Settings tab, Advanced button, Troubleshoot tab.

Yeah, it's on full hardware accelerration. Just checked.

Yes, if you have just installed a new CPU on a new MOBO, it will often default to the minimum FSB speed. Check all the BIOS options, I have seen the option set in some unusual places before. When the FSB is running too slow, it produces exactly the symptoms you are experiencing.

How?

Sorry, I'm not too good when it comes to computers. :(

Usually, press the "Delete" key when it is booting up. Actually what model MOBO is it? The manual is available online.

Alright, I changed the Hypertransport speed and width. They were originally set to 'Auto', but I changed them to the maximum - 16 bit width, 1000mhz speed. So, lets see what happens now.

The problem seems to be fixed. My computer is running alot smoother now.

I tried Company of Heroes, and it runs better (not alot though, as I didn't upgrade to a much faster video card), and my computer can actually handle physics being turned on, rather than before when it was baffled with tough equations such as 3 + 3. ;)

Thanks for all your help everyone. :)

OK, I may be old fashioned, but can I suggest that you...

DO A GOOD BACKUP OF YOUR RECOVERED DATA RIGHT NOW!

BEFORE the new CPU comprehensively trashes it this time.

Uh, you're "not too good" with computers yet you're screwing around with bent pins on a CPU? Something doesn't "compute" (sorry, couldn't resist) here.

I meant when dealing with the BIOS, cmd, etc. Stuff like that. I know a bit when it comes to actual hardware.

One step ahead of ya. :)

:relieved:

OK, now continue fiddling with the settings, etc.

Just a quick question: Does the hard disk really work hard when apps are running? Is it really getting a thrashing?
