One reason:

The original liquid fuel booster (in the center) was painted white. They stopped painting it because the paint weighed 600 lbs. Forget the paint and you have 600 lbs more payload.


Otherwise, yeah, why not? More money for space exploration = good thing!

But if you can get enough money from the advertising to cover the reduced payload, you come out ahead.
