You have an important point. I won't deny it. However it is not absolute. Change can occur through education and awareness. "The best answer to bad speech is more speech" I think speaking up and speaking out can be an effective way to change things. I think an individual can make a contribution without abandoning his or her party. I seek to make change from within. But I don't think you have real influence if you're a group of Republicans. You've got to be a group of people, like the religious right, only the other way round, who can agree that if they push the religion thing too far, you will at least abstain.
As it is, there's a guy with a preacher's collar holding a gun to the Republican Party's head and saying "Fly this country to the New Jerusalem".
I'll let my posts speak for themselves. I can't please everyone so I choose to please myself. I try and be honest and state my opinion. I hope that opinion has the ability to change minds. But I'm not deluded. I recognize the limit of my voice and I would not pretend to be able to change those who are fanatic. I have stated clearly on many occasions that I'm for the legalization of drugs and prostitution. I'm for gay rights including marriage. I'm for the separation of church and state and I only want science taught in school. There are so many people round here who are right-wing Americans and yet skeptics/atheists. Where are you standing up?
What a defeatist attitude. I don't know how much power I have no matter what I do.Even if I do things your way I'm not certain if it means a hill of beans. I'm not however going to run crawling under my covers because the task is difficult. {sheesh}. What a crappy attitude. Perhaps we should all get off of this forum because in the end we are only a tiny minority engaging in discussion and debate. The thing is, is this is where change, if it is going to occur, is going to come from. Many forums and groups like this one where both sides are aired and folks aren't just preaching to the converted. I don't think my words alone are significant, however I believe voices like mine joined together can make a difference. So, go ahead and mock me and have contempt for me for being idealistic and sticking to my convections and trying to make a difference but I'm not going to stop or change to your way of thinking or acting simply because you don't think little 'ol me matters. How much money do you raise? How much leverage do you have? Who, at the top of the political tree, cares in the slightest what you think?
Yeah, I still think there is a poisioning of the well. The entire party is being dismissed completly because of one group though I concede that it is significant. The Republican party isn't simply the Religious right and they are not the only ones in control though they do have significant control at the moment.Rob Lister said:I don't think you should withdraw completely. The Reverends Jessy Jackson and Al Sharpton might bring you back in a little anyway.
That said, religious fundamentalism/conservatism/republicanism all play well together but none are perfectly compatible with the others.

Huh? How is the religious right analogous to cancer? Poisoning the well are we?Daylight said:Isn’t that like saying you reject you are going to die because you have one group of cancer cells?
???? Riiiight. Start a new party. That's been shown to be soooo effective. Sorry but no, I don't agree with you. It's a politically dumb idea. What happened to "mend it don't end it"? By your logic the religious right has taken over America. Perhaps we should all move to France. The republican party ceased being the republican party when the religious part took over. Time to start a new party if you value the old republican values.

I understand. You’re just grieving at the loss of your party to the religious right.
Helping Republicans deal with the reality they have lost their party and what it stands for.

The good news is you’re in your first step to recovery.

Rob Lister said:I have NO idea where you are coming from. The Religious Right is, in my skeptic/agnostic/conservative estimation, a bad influence on the republican party but so too do the Democrats have bad influences on theres. Each of the major bad influences does much to control the individual parties. Right now (and I mean RIGHT now), the left's bad influences have resulted in a loss of the majority of the governorships, house, senate, and oval office. Very soon to be a majority of the Supreme court too if those influences keep using the same tactics.
Don't get me wrong. While conservative, and currently voting republican in most elections, I do not like republicans. I never have. They are simple the most sane of the only two insane choices I have at hand, in my voting opinion. (no, I'm not going to play tit for tat with the issues, take my opinion at face value).
The right embraces the likes of Pat Robertson (a little) while the left embraces the likes of Michael Moore. Tough decision on my part. I gotta hang with Pat. You hang with whomever you want.
