Consciousness question

53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? ~ 1 Corinthians 15:53-54
I don't know, does anybody have any ideas about what this might mean?

No. because I haven't succeeded in killing myself.
And I am glad you haven't. I hope you don't try again. Now, use the life you do have left to try and learn something, instead of producing convoluted manuscripts based on your dreams.

(emphasis mine)
The children are dead, Iacchus. Dead. I don't even want to think what their last moments were like, dying at the hands of their own mother.

Any philosophy that allows us to take child murder and say "the children are probably better off" is just plain sick and twisted.

Nah--if you're a christian...it's an innoculation...a little bit of discomfort in exchange for guaranteed eternal bliss.

If they'd lived...they could end up in eternal anguish for exercising their free will wrong--what person wants to bring children onto the planet if there's the possibility of everlasting anguish for that person. Just say no.

In terms of being immortal, why should we be afraid of that which can't harm us? The only thing that makes me sad, is that I'm unable to join them.

So then you agree--Andrea Yates accomplished her goal...she ensured her childrens' eternal happiness. Had they lived it could have ended badly--plus there would be more suffering just for being a part of day to day life? So, Andrea Yates did a good thing--and she may well pay with everlasting anguish (as she was aware)--but doesn't the fact that she ensured the eternal bliss make your christian heart proud of her? Afterall, she and her husband were the ones who loved the kids most...who lost the most...right? But it's all okay, if it means their little spirit kids are playing on rainbows forever in heaven. Why wouldn't any Christian mother want the same for her beloved children? Sure you'll miss the tykes--but what's a few decades compared to eternity??! Won't Andrea Yates be smiling in hell as she knows that her beloved children are eternally happy? Won't it all have been worth it? This is, afterall what the bible teaches...you know...life is a test...fail and you pay forever...die while young and get eternal bliss (so long as you're baptized into the right religion before dying)--why not encourage other mothers to do the same. Why not stand up for Andrea Yates? Or why not pass out birth control to prevent any more entities from being born only to suffer eternally! Their everlasting doom can be tied to you if you did nothing to prevent them you know...

And why can't you join them?

My point is...biblical beliefs can be really ugly and misguided--they deserve a second look. They proffer lots of suffering and not just hope--and if the hope is not real--Andrea Yate's children are dead forever because of some very widely accepted christian beliefs. If God were real--why not reward Andrea Yates for being so giving--she ensured her childrens heavenly eternity? Besides, he's the dude who had his son killed for you. Oh, and didn't he test Abraham by asking him to kill his son?

Your god is a dick, Icchaus. Your allegiences are misguided. Souls aren't real. And that is not a bad thing. It means THIS life here is important--it means the fact that you exist is amazing...The fact that you live in a time where there are computers and access to information and knowledge that no one has ever had access to before is wonderous. Wake up.

No you can't join the kids--because they no longer exist.

And, Icchus--if the soul lives on forever, then whats the big deal about killing people--doesn't it just get to the eternity thing faster...and, heck, it could mean you spare them from eternal damnation--one never knows when one will bite from the tree of knowledge, you know. Gollly, I wonder if god makes exceptions for folks who died the day before they were going to accept Jesus.

Religion is a ridiculous belief based upon the idea that there are souls. Without souls--the facade crumbles terribly. And without souls...the whole god thing becomes unnecessary--the whole god thing that you are never supposed to question and always supposed to blindly obey (and special books, people, etc. will tell you exactly what that obedience means)--but beware the false prophets--oh, and beware of evil organizations like JREF that might make your faith a little less blind!"

If you think I'm using this to justify child abuse you're mistaken. In fact if I were a good a person, and someone came along and shot me with a gun, that might help expedite my getting to heaven sooner but, that still doesn't make it right does it? Neither does that help the person who did it, especially if they had done so with malice. This is going to be the more difficult stain to wipe away.

The thing is, what kind of person does it require to kill somebody else? If it requires feeding something monstrous and hideous inside of you, then this is the very thing you will be confronted with upon death. And "the saints" will invariably have their place ... in heaven.
