Circumcision

Hummm - as anyone can see from this thread, the "benefits" from circumcision of infant boys is debatable at best! That's why I didn't allow my son to be circumcised; the procedure was described to me (including the clamping of his hands!), but no one could give me any good reason to put him through it. If he wants to change that later, well, then, that's his choice. But there was no way I was going to sign off on strapping this little infant down and allowing someone to cut part of his body off for no clear-cut benefit. Period.

But, but, but THAT is how God knows you are one of the special people! If you don't whack off part of your sons pee pee, you can't be one of the CHOSEN ONES!!! And it has to be done on the 8th day of life!!

Or something terrible will happen, or something. I'm not quite sure, but God sais it, so it must be true.

I understand what you're saying. But I was confronted with a bunch of "medical" gobbledegook as well; I couldn't believe the resistance I encountered. Everyone was looking at me as if my next step would be to boil him up and eat him with potatoes! It's very, very hard to go against tradition sometimes; especially if it's cultural/religious/medical tradition. Ah well, he's in kindergarten now, and so far no adverse affects from hanging on to the skin "GOD" gave him!

It is my great honor to announce that my son, Harry, was circumcised yesterday morning at 11:00 a.m. He was held by his grandfather on a pillow, the entire procedure lasting about forty-five seconds. He cried very little before, during or after the ceremony. Right now, he is resting, eating and behaving normally (or as normally as a nine-day old does anything).

I thank you for your kind wishes for his continued health.

After finally getting hold of the complete 4 seasons of Penn & Teller Bullsh*t (not so easy in UK has its not offically released over here) I've been steadily wading my way through.

Imagine my surprise when I came to the Circumcision episode - I thought I already new all about this ghastly procedure. I had always assumed that it was confined entirely to the Jewish community but my jaw litterally hit the flaw when I realised that it's far more common infact it appears to almost be the norm over in the US. To watch those "so called" doctors trying to justify acts of barbarism, and to do so in a flipant and nonchalent manner really made my blood boil.

The worst was the assumption that its a "cosmetic procedure" on par with breast enlargement - try telling that to a new born baby. Surely any procedure could be done when the child is older with his consent.

Am I correct in thinking that the vast majority of men are indeed circumcised?

Phil

It's been common practice in the US for essentially all babies since I dunno, the 1940s or 50s.

It does seem a bit...stupid, now.

I suggest carrots...not potatoes. Adds a little color to any boiled dish.

And I get that "he eats babies!!!" look/response just about anytime I mention the truth, too.

Welcome to the club!

Anyone who thinks you "have" to have your sone circumcised is an idiot. You need to tell them that. How on earth did humans manage to survive for the 100,000 years or so before we started this practice if it's "medically necessary"?

Congratulations. Your son is very lucky to be born into a loving family with strong ties to their history and culture. I'm certain you will be a wonderful father to him for the rest of your life.

I pointed out in another thread here, about religion and ritual mutilation of children, that the Jews are at least humane about the act. They give an 8 day old baby wine before cutting them. And the most traditional Jews also suck the penis with the mouth after the surgery, to disinfect the bleeding remains.

While this may seem barbaric, it doesn't seem to bother those who do it, so does it matter? Should we really start sticking our skeptical noses into religions and ancient rituals? Is it any business of a society what parents do to their babies?
If God tells a parent to slice off part of a baby, who are we to question?

The child is not in a position to weigh in on the discussion of whether the risks of circumcision are worth it in order to adhere to an archaic genital mutilation tribal marking practice.

Amen, and case closed!

w00t! Now I can do whatever I want to kids as long as I can point to some bible passage!

As long as you don't feed them shrimp or lobster. No, wait. That's the old testiment.
Which book in the bible does "Spare the rod, spoil the child." come from? I'm thinking it was around Mathew.

Considering the latter has been used for justification for child abuse for centuries, I'm not sure it matters. Pick and choose as you like. ;)

Hey, if GOD said to mutilate thy child, then that is the end of the story. I mean, it is written down in a BOOK even, directly from GOD! The chosen ones are different, and GOD has commanded them to cut, and cut they shall, for whoever is not mutilated is not worthy in His sight, to be one GOD's special race. You can't argue with GOD man!
