Just Google it - US car manufacturers worked together to create a Lobby to push for car focused cities to be designed, and they illegally worked to make public transportation more expensive.
The concept is The Automotive City (look it up), and there are countless scientific studies on how America was tricked into abandoning European style cities that focused on walking and public transportation in favor of cars.
