Moving on forward.

Edit-

Best part of the article is:

“Americans now have the chance to see a society can treat gay people with respect,” said Evan Wolfson, executive director of the New York-based Freedom to Marry organization promoting homosexual marriage. “Families are helped, and no one is hurt.”

Unless you live in Alberta Canada. Good ole Ralphy boy is sitting stubborn on this one and not budging. No same-sex marriages in Ablerta, no matter what the federal gov't says. Heh love him or hate him you at least always know where he stands :).

It won't last. Alberta simply does not have the constitutional power to do it. They cannot determine whether two people have the capacity to marry - that is federal. It is a separation of powers issue, which is something that the "notwithstanding clause" has no bearing on.

In the meantime, gay Albertans can simply come to Ontario, BC, or any other province for the wedding.

Oh I agree completely, won't last long at all I'm sure. Seems like a waste of good stubborness to make a stand on this particular issue to me. At the end of the day how does allowing gays to marry affect me? It simply just does not. Nothing like a little bit of ole grassroots religion sneaking into politics to make things interesting, if pointless.

Exactly.

Interestingly, I found a "feedback" form on King Ralph's webpage. Here's what I entered into it:
I am very disappointed with the Alberta Government's stance on same-sex marriages. I believe the refusal to show the tolerance and open-mindedness shown by our federal government and courts belies the backward, intolerant, even bigoted attitudes that exist within this province, and especially within this province's government. I cannot see how allowing two men or two women to marry can in any way harm or even inconvenience anyone else. I am a man married to a woman, and it certainly wouldn't bother me.

I eagerly await the response; hopefully it's not just some automated "thank you for your comments" crap.

Obviously politics. He hopes to gain natinal support of people who oppose it. Plus he's voicing his opinon, I see nothing wrong with that.

I think its a great thing Canada did though, time to break these silly social barriers down.

Of course, the big question is "was Ralph sober when he made those remarks.":D

He's certainly doing nothing to remove the stigma of Albertans as close-minded redneck cowboys.
