Sweden is not typical of the entire industrialised world, Anders!
You are rignt there. Sweden is one of the most highly electrified countries of the world. Lots of eletric lighting, most houses are electrically heated, excellent coverage of mobile phones, computers, and internet. At the same time, the population density is fairly low, so air is relatively unpolluted. So here we should see any effects of elctromagnetic fields without confounders from other environmental vectors.

Hans

OK, to preempt further discussion on whether I will keep my promise, I have now started a tutorial thread here .

I have opted for the Q and A mode.

Hans

Anders, Olle Johansson of the Karolinska published a paper showing that cancers are rising in many countries including I believe Sweden. Are you going to contradict the Karolinska as well as the former Chief Statistical Officer of the UK (Michel Coleman) and the chief Statistics Officer of Washingtonn State (Sam Milham), al of whom assert that these cases are rising?

Thanks Hans. May be between us we can get to the bottom of all this. Meanwhile I will be altering the mis statements I made out of ignorance about your status on our website. Can you tell me if as an electrical engineer you are a member of your countriy's equivalent of the IEE, and what is their vierw of EMF bioeffects? Post it in the new site.

You probably know very well that cancer cases numbers are rising, because we have an increasingly older population. Young people are not getting cancer in any higher numbers. So, no I do not disagree with medical doctors on that.

Steenke, may be you are quite right. A study of 12000 cellphone users in Skandinavia showed adverse effects when they used the phone for more than 2 hours a day (Kjel Hanssen Mild et al of Umea Univ reported the study about five years ago ). There seemed to be some sort of dose resposse relationship with increasing call duration if i recall correctly. Then Holmberg et al reported an elevation of brain tumours among Skandinavian cellphone users, with tumours/lymphomas appearing on the same side as the user interface. These were probably the earliest studies around in the published literature on cellphone epidemiology, all from Skandinavia

I think that this does not apply to breast cancers, which seems to be increasing in women and men alike in the under fifties. (Screening was until recently confined to the over fifties)

Most statisticians adjust routinely for age, and did so in this case, so your remarks regarding the aging population do not apply.

To PJ (replying to an earlier post). Yes our work is interesting, which is why six of our posters were accepted by the scientific committee of that conference. (I think we presented more posters than any other single institution there, perhaps except Bristol Univ, whose Denis Henshaw was the Conference Chairman).

The quinone discovery and our ongioing work on this is actually spectacular (imho) and if you see the clinical trials of this intervention on colorectal cancer patients in last August's BJC you might understand why.

You are very right Hans. Actually, we have more mobile phone accounts than there are people in the country. So for every man women child, there is more than one account. There are probably also more cell phones than people.

But, not all house are electrically heated, due to high energy taxes. Nowadays it is a close race between oil heated and electrical heated. But on the other hand we have a lot of radon problems!

And Oh, we are among the healthiest people in the world where just Japanese men, and French and Swiss women live longer than Swedish men and women.

So, cancer isn’t really a problem here in Sweden as far as I know.

Here are a few more observations for the debate: I have copied it from an email just received, and apologise for the shouting by that third party author

BRAIN TUMOUR IS NOW THE NUMBER ONE LIFE THREATENING DISEASE FOR CHILDREN – ABOVE LEUKAEMIA AND CONSISTENT WITH STUDIES IN EUROPE AND THE UK. (Statement by Senator Lyn Allison, Australian Democrats, A Current Affair, 7 June 2004)

THESE STUDIES SHOW THERE HAS BEEN A 40% ACROSS-THEBOARD INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF BRAIN TUMOURS IN THE PAST 20 YEARS – COINCIDING WITH THE USE OF MOBILE PHONES (SENATOR LYN ALLISON)

1400 AUSTRALIANS ARE DIAGNOSED WITH BRAIN TUMOURS EVERY YEAR AND THESE TUMOURS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MORE CHILD DEATHS ANNUALLY THAN LEUKAEMIA.

ACCORDING TO PROMINEBNT SYDNEY NEUROSURGEON DR. CHARLES TEO, HE HAS SEEN A 21% INCREASE IN CHILDREN’S BRAIN TUMOURS OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS. HE PUBLICLY STATED HIS CONCERN OVER THE POSSIBLE EFFECT OF MOBILE PHONE USE ON THESE STATISTICS. (A CURRENT AFFAIR, 7 JUNE 2004)

DR TEO HAS ISSUED A WARNING ON NATIONAL TV FOR PARENTS TO BE AWARE. IT IS HIS OPINION THAT THERE IS A CONNECTION BETWEEN EMR AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF BRAIN CANCER. DR TO OFTEN SEES PATIENTS WITH THEIR TUMOUR JUST ABOVE THE EAR IN A POSITION THAT CORRESPONDS THE ANTENNA FEED POINT. HE SAID HE HAS SEEN BRAIN SCANS WITH INFLAMMATION OF THE MENINGES UNDER THE ANTENNA FEED POINT – INDICATING A HEATING EFFECT.

THIS IS INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY DON MAISCH AT THE LONDON SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE TWO WEEKS AGO FOR CHILDHOOD LEUKAEMIA.

Yes, you are right, my mistake!

In Sweden the number of cases per 100'000 people has increased by about 50% for men since 1961. But that great increase seem to a large extent be due to better diagnosing regarding prostate cancer.

Number of deaths has decreased though, and that a very reassuring fact, in my opinion.

Anders, the evidence from the Nordic countries is overwhelming: I dont know if this post breaks some rule about length, but here is a response by Johannson on the issue: (we have read most of the cited studies and have most in hard copy here in our library).

Please find enclosed some more research references supplied direct from Professor Olle Johansson.

But, brain tumour cases are decreasing since 1982, at least in Sweden. And the number of cases is also very low, about 30 of 100’000. Death rate is about 13 of 100’000. There seem to be no correlation between mobile phone use in the curves I’m looking at right now.

Anders, the evidence from the Nordic countries is overwhelming: I dont know if this post breaks some rule about length, but here is a response by Johannson on the issue: (we have read most of the cited studies and have most in hard copy here in our library).
Still, no significant increases of number of brain tumour cases since 82-83, according to the cancer fund in Sweden.

But I just want to ask you one question: You still claim that a magnet will: “If you suffer from chronic muscular pain such as RSI, especially lower back pain, do yourself the favour of trying Coghill’s Supermagnets. We promise you will be surprised at their gentle and effective action!”

I don’t get it. You present scientific studies about cancer, but you totally disregard science when it comes to magnetism?

Hello, all:

You are again letting Roger get away with spamming heaps of links, and engage in endless bickering about statistics. That way he evades answering the hard questions here: What is HIS evidence for HIS claims?

My standpoint has always been that if the claims that electromagnetic radiation cause cancer, why doesn't it show in the statistical material?

And I agree with you Hans, but, then again, what can we do? Posting long post may be the only way he knows to answer our plead for evidence of his claims.

Funny thing about Roger: Very scientific when it comes to cancer, not scientific when it comes to magnetic therapies. I would like to know what professor Johansson at Karolinska, thinks about magnetic therapies!

I took a vacation and it appears the mice have been playing in my absence! :D

Queried data errors in second Harmoniser report.

We do not appear to have ever published the second harmonmiser report on our website, having been given permission only for the first one, as far as I have been able to ascertain. It would be helpful if you could point me to the data which has presumably been made public from another source, so I can take a closer look at it. It may be that these so called errors are nothing to do with us.

You quoted it in support of your claims, now you claim it has nothing to do with you?

By the way, PJ tested the harmonizer in accordance with its claims and it failed miserably - what do you have to say about that?

However, to be honest, in this thread I have been concentrating on issues which imho are far more important , taking the view that Hock's question owes more to a determination to pick on trivail points rather than to address the main issues I have raised here, e.g. the adverse health effects from very weak EMFs and the persistent efforts of the power utilities and the telecoms industry to ignore them.

The main issue here seems to be your wild claims and your persistent efforts to ignore the science, the facts and the refutations of them! :D

So far, more than appropriate attention has focused on abusive comments, trivialities, and irrelevancies such as whether my biology degree in the 1960s is pertinent to modern bioelectromagnetics. Whilst I am fully open-minded to criticism and education, I do want to concentrate on these main issues, so will not be deflected from that ultimate objective. ]

I thought we had established that you do NOT have a biology degree from the 1960's (or any other time)...

I don't think any real sceptic doubts that chronic EM exposure cause harm.

If you don't have doubts then you are a beliver and no longer a sceptic.

No, I'm not a member of such an organisation. I am a member of a management organisation because I have been working in mangement for a number of years.

I don't think the Danish EE organisation has any en bloc opinion, or official standpoint on this. I would assume that, like most of us, individuals assume that too much EM exposure is unhealthy, the debate being what constitutes "too much".

I post here, because it is a biolectromagnetic debate issue.

Hans
