My brother and his fiance were talking to me this afternoon, and somehow O'Reilly came up. I mentioned that I don't hold the man in high regard, and they told me how they actually find him to be decent. We talked about it for a little while, but the conversation was cut short by my uncle thinking we were talking about Steven Colbert.

I would appreciate some links to clear demonstrations of O'Reilly's spinning, lying, and overt propaganda to send to my brother's fiance. She seemed open to consideration.

Alternately, if you think O'Reilly is a really great guy, I would be interested to see how he has done something positive for, well, anybody (besides himself and his agenda).

Much thanks!

I don't do links--LIIIIIINNKKKKKSSSSS!!!--but IMAEHO, he strikes me as a bit of a phony on the personal side, who nevertheless is typically spot-on with his reporting/commentary on events.

Colbert, actually, was invented by the left BECAUSE of guys like O'Reilly, and Limbaugh.

No...not because they act like this, but because O'Reilly and Limbaugh (and every other national and most local conservative yakkers) have to have their ducks lined up in very tight formation before they open their mouths.

This is what, to the left, requires a Colbert: someone they can say "see! SEEEEE!!!?? He's SO just like these conservatives: always wrong, sticking his foot in his mouth, stupid as a brick, etc., etc."

In actual fact, while yes, you can nit-pick anyone like O'Reilly or Limbaugh to death (sexual harasment!! Drug addiction!!!) due to the very nature of their business: you put out tens of thousands of words a day over 15-30 years and it would be surprising indeed if you did not occasionally stumble over a word, or even get some facts wrong. Remember what they tried with Coulter when she misidentified the father as the grandfater (or other way 'round?) of a minor personage in her book about socialists and communists deep in the American government...this was a LIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEE!!! It was the only thing they could find to attack in the whole book, and it was front page, above the fold news that Coulter had LIIIIIEDDDDDDDDDD!!! on this very important issue.

Same with conservative yakker-commentators like O'Reilly. Has he ever (oh, the humanity!) put his foot in it (ever see that interview with that beauty queen who had some rather innocent photos online? Sheeesh...you wanted to reach through the screen, slap O'Reilly and tell him to stop acting like a dirty old man!) or gotten a fact or three wrong.

Um...yeah. So? Does that mean that ON BALANCE he is WROOOONGGGGGGGG!!! Or a LIIIIAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!!

Um..no, it does mean he's a human.

Gee, go figger.

Pretty much daily, he produces something dishonest, disgusting, or downright disturbed... so, pretty much any link to unedited videoclips of his will do.

The lowest I've seen him go? When he said this:
The situation here for this kid looks to me to be a lot more fun than what he had under his old parents. He didn't have to go to school. He could run around and do whatever he wanted.
He was referring to Shawn Hornbeck, who was kidnapped at 11, and molested for 4 years before being returned to his family.

So where is the lie or inaccuracy in that?

It was pretty clear that this kid did not like his step-father...despite all the playacting the stepdad did for the cameras, it was obvious as hell they detested each other...still.

The kid was what, 15 when he was found? Had his own cell...his own GUN?

You don't like O'Reilly and that's fine...I don't like him. I think he's phony as hell with all that "who's lookin' out for the folks," crap. But who is this proof of anything but his actually SAYING what everyone in the media was reporting, but not admitting.

It's as if some news reporter actually noted that a criminal with a hyphenated Spanish surname is an illegal.

Political commentators and journalist are held to different standards. When a political commentator is caught making up a source, usually very little happens. When a journalist is caught making up a source (and making up fictitious statistics to support his point of view), he is fired.

The problem is that while most of O'Reilly's defenders see him as a political commentator, Mr. O'Reilly sees himself as a journalist (as per his website).

If you are looking for more information on Bill O'Reilly, do searches in the Political, Social Issues, and Religion subforums.

He really can't be that stupid, can he... oh, never mind, it IS Bill O'Reilly, we know he's that stupid. Ask him about his Peabody!

Uhhh.... have you tried google?

Well, yes, that's where I started. I found lots of pages that would say how awful Bill O'Reilly is, but without sources, and I figured folks around here would have more ready access to sites that not only state that the man is evil, but also demonstrate it. So, references/quotes are what I was hoping to see in this thread, which is more than I found with a google search.

Thanks for the link, Regnad!

Tokie, I noticed that you've posted on almost every one of my subscribed threads. New compy for christmas?

Oh-Really, Bill is the Oprah Winfrey for people who, politically, don't know how they are supposed to think or react. Millions of women in the USA rush to their TeeVees to see Oprah emote, Oprah talk, Oprah gain weight, Oprah lose weight, Oprah tell them what they are supposed to read - personally approved by her. Weak. Lots of weak people in the USA. And that is also who Oh-Really and basically all the others in the glut of political ThinkSpeak cater to. It's our voyeuristic and vicarious-living society that is actually at fault. Shorthand: Today we don't play poker. We turn on the TeeVee and watch other people play poker. And wonder how it must feel to have those cards, to bet that money, to hope your hand is good enough or that you can bluff well enough. More and more, we don't do. We watch. Our lives aren't reality - so we watch Reality TV to get a taste of what it might be like Out There.

Okay, I'm being a bit hyperbolic. But not by much.

Oh-Really is a big, giant, egotistical loudmouth who, deep down, really believes he knows it all. This was the guy who was calling on all Americans to boycott Canada, remember? Because Canada wisely stayed out of the Iraq War. He's always threatening to have "his security people" pay a visit to his enemies (Enemy = Anyone who opposes him). He hates competing viewpoints, cannot handle criticism. He believes his own hype. A blowhard. A fool. But he makes lots of noise and at least SOUNDS as if he knows what he's talking about (even though he's full of crap), so the weak-willed love him. That love translates to viewership and listenership and sponsorship and MONEY. Just like Oprah Winfrey. Oprah doesn't empower women. She takes it from them.

He just released from another forum suspension for Christmas; maybe it'll last to the new year.

He's precious, isn't he?

Have you ever even seen his show? That's disgustingly out of context and not reflective of what he was saying at all.

Actually, I saw it in context in it's entirety... and he's repeated it. It is reflective of what he's saying... and tokenconservative seems to agree.

Yeah...a very objective source, to be sure. Just look at the name!
What does objectivity have to do with it? The information contained at the website will stand or fail on its merits, regardless of any site's name.

Should every post of yours be disregarded by some simply on the basis of your screen name?

I haven't read through the thread so this might have been mentioned before but if there was one thing I would use to discredit Bill O'Reilly to someone it would be the incident with Jeremy Glick.

Long story short, a son of a 9/11 victim, a Bush basher, agreed to appear on his program and when he said his piece about Bush, he got screamed at and threatened by Bill before he cut his mike and threw him out of the studio. On subsequent shows, Bill ranted and raved about Glick and span him out to be a conspiracy nut, which he most decidely is not and never was.

It was featured in that movie Outfoxed and appeared in several anti-O'Reilly books.

Here's a video and transcript:

I think the Andrea Makris-- Falafel episode was pretty egregious too... especially given his books preaching morality...

Keith Obermann clips are also a great source of O'reilley caught in yet another lie... and there's Al Frankins' book... Lying Liars...

If I wasn't so lazy I'd do a youtube search for the best--but they're everywhere in stunning idiotic detail.

O'lielly.

(BTW, I think tokenconservative sounds a lot like the guy... and I think Stephen Colbert does a fantastic parody)

Actually, totally in context. I think his comments about the kidnapped and RAPED 11 year old kid, along with his perverse views on the Malmedy massacre give an accurate picture of what a tool-bag he and his loyal viewers are.

I cannot fathom how isolated from reality a person would have to be to defend his repulsive comments about Hornbeck.

approximately as isolated as tokenconservative, apparently.

Interestingly, it is completely in context, and absolutely reflective of what he was saying, as the transcript and video clip show.

Sorry one of your heroes is a terrible human being, but don't blame me for it.

ETA: have you asked him about his Peabody Awards?
