Woo Hoo!! Secular Humanist!

Secular Humanism

Belief in Deity: Not considered important. Most Humanists are atheists or agnostics.

Incarnations: Same as above.

Origins of universe/life: The scientific method is most respected as the means for revealing the mysteries of the origins of the universe and life.

After death: An afterlife or spiritual existence after death is not recognized.

Why evil? No concept of “evil.” Reasons for wrongdoing are explored through scientific methods, e.g. through study of sociology, psychology, criminology, etc.

Salvation: No concept of afterlife or spiritual liberation or salvation. Realizing ones personal potential and working for the betterment of humanity through ethical consciousness and social works are considered paramount, but from a naturalistic rather than supernatural standpoint.

Undeserved suffering: No spiritual reasons, but rather a matter of human vulnerability to misfortune, illness, and victimization.

Contemporary Issues: The American Humanist Association endorses elective abortion. Other contemporary views include working for equality for homosexuals, gender equality, a secular approach to divorce and remarriage, working to end poverty, promoting peace and non-violence, and environmental protection.

Well, seeing as the site is highly linked to SELL ME A BOOK, and even switched its self over to AMAZON.COM "for me" in the middle of the test (possibly one of the links one pixel away from a radio button), I would imagine that any belief system that doesn't have a book (i.e. NON-RELIGIOUS) written for it would be of far lower importance than "Secular Humanist - 100%", for which there are books, and which it "inerringly" selected for me.

I took this test a year ago and my results have changed...no surprise to me.

Now ------------------------------------ A Year Ago
1. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (100%) ---(86%)

2. Mainline - Conservative Christian Protestant (88%) ----(100%)

6. Eastern Orthodox (65%) ------------------------------(95%)

7. Roman Catholic (65%)----------------------------------(95%)

8. Unitarian Universalism (65%) ------------------------(51%)

25. Jainism (30%) -----------------------------(30%)
26. Hinduism (28%) ---------------------------(38%)
27. Jehovah's Witness (24%)----------------(39%)

The top four.
1. Secular Humanism (100%)

2. Unitarian Universalism (91%)

3. Liberal Quakers (74%)

4. Non-theist (72%)
**********
I can't agree with the catagories very much, because Non-theist and Secular Humanist are often one and the same. I think because I answered the "what should religion include" questions rather than saying "not applicable", the poll decided that my responses were more secular humanist than non-theist. I consider this a weakness of this type of poll. It makes the assumption that having a moral code somehow makes you religious, a notion which I find chauvinistic.

I was going to disagree with you, but I see now that I did get a higher non-theist score, although I got fed up with the non applicables after a while. I'm curious what kind of scores you got for the lowest ranked though. Seems I'm not cut out to be a Witness at least. :)

Same as you, but more percentage. Higher percentages are for the same reason, I suspect. (voting for any of the "religious morality" catagories increases your religion scores)

24. Islam (16%)
25. Orthodox Judaism (16%)
26. Roman Catholic (16%)
27. Jehovah's Witness (11%)

Ok, here is my list:

1. Mainline - Conservative Christian Protestant (99%)
2. Orthodox Quaker (94%)
3. Seventh Day Adventist (90%)
4. Eastern Orthodox (85%)
5. Roman Catholic (85%)
6. Mainline - Liberal Christian Protestants (72%)
7. Orthodox Judaism (52%)
8. Islam (51%)
9. Liberal Quakers (47%)
10. Hinduism (42%)

The bottom five are really interesting. Judaism and Islam back to back? I wouldn't have expected that.

For what it's worth this is what I got.
All along I thought I was closer to the unitarian universalist's attitude if not the system wholeheartedly and now I find out I'm more a reformist jew......go figure.
I suppose I should go have my palm read so I can end up with one more generalized glimpse of myself.
