"It made small cracking noises, like a bunch of small twigs being broken," said Letkemann, 18, who had testified that he looked away when Orlewicz started sawing at the man's neck. [snip]

Prosecutors have called the case a "thrill killing." Letkemann provided clues to the motive, saying Orlewicz was angry at Sorensen because he hadn't repaid a $400 debt or returned a .38 caliber revolver.

Orlewicz lured Sorensen into the Canton Township garage of Orlewicz's grandfather on the ruse they were going to extort $3,000 from another teen, Letkemann said.

Orlewicz struck quickly, jumping Sorensen from behind and slashing his throat as he entered the garage the teens prepared with tarps and cleaning supplies, Letkemann said. [Snip]

Yep, some ugly things happen around Detroit. (Canton is a little west of the city.) So what's your point?

I've even heard that some ugly things happen in Germany nowadays. Murders and such. Who'd'a thunk it?

But you know what else distinguishes Michigan? (Besides having an area called "the Thumb"). It was the first major political jurisdiction in the English-speaking world to abolish capital punishment, ca.1840, and it's maintained that.

History I read said that the locals were so disgusted by the number of Irish and other immigrants hanged across the river, in British-ruled Windsor, that they said "we'll be better than that" and abolished it. Michigan had been a state, and able to make such a decision, for only a few years.

But Oliver, I suppose that was just another piece of American wickedness.

The interesting thing about this trial:

He is charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing, beheading and burning of 26-year-old Daniel Sorensen on Nov. 7.

His plea:
During Monday's pretrial conference, Judge Annette J. Berry asked Thomas to declare his trial defense strategy.

"Self-defense," Thomas said.
:boggled:

Looks like Thomas had the right stuff to be a guard at the Dora Camp where V2's were manufactured by your guys Oliver!

Is Oliver going to be made the topic on conversation in every thread he makes?

So long as he starts a "topic" by posting a news story without comment, yes. That's how a troll behaves.

I've actually watched a little of the trial and found it interesting because of the supposed self defense. I'm looking forward to the defense testimony. Usually with a self-defense plea, the defendant will testify.

"He threw his neck on the knife 23 times, your honour. It was awful. Then after his head fell off, he grabbed some matches and kerosene, and set himself alight."

Right.........

Sounds a little like the traditional definition of "chutzpah:" someone who kills his parents and then pleads for clemency on the grounds that he is an orphan.

Hey, between this bottom-scraping murder and the mayor's 14,000+ text messages regarding graphic sex with his chief of staff, metro Detroit has two national news stories going on.

We're on a roll, don't crush out groove!

My hope is that the 14,000 naughty messages are read out in public at the beheading trial.

Actually there is a 3rd big story in the national news (international, if the Canadians are paying attention): the disastrous play of the Deee-troit Taggers (to quote George Kell, in the good old days).

They're now 2-10, having lost the last two games 6-0 and 11-0. The latter involved giving up 2 grand slams, and going 3 innings, their own batters only taking 21 pitches to side out all 3 innings.
