Australia census

Have your say on the 2016 Census questions!

I put in my two cents:

"The Religion question should ask "What religion does the person currently practise?"
And the option for "No Religion" should be at the top, as it is in New Zealand and the UK. With it currently at the bottom it can be easily missed.
The numbers on the census do not reflect the numbers of people actually attending services."

Actually I think the religion question would be better answered by counting up the number of people who attend church. Otherwise people will say they have attended church in the last month or so but it really was several months ago, if at all. It should not really be in the census at all.

It would be better to ask whether a person has a religion, and have an 'if yes' question afterwards.

I asked previously how do you define a religion? If I have a piece of paper that says I am religion X should I put religion X on the census? Many people would do so.

More than 55 per cent of people in the small Victorian community of Tankerton have no religious affiliation, the highest for any suburb in the country, according to the 2011 census.

Located on French Island, 60km southeast of Melbourne, the suburb with a 3921 postcode may have experienced a severe crisis of faith since the last national stocktake in 2006, with a more than 13 per cent jump in those who ticked the "no religion" box.

Tankerton was not alone though, with SA's Salisbury South (54 per cent) and WA's Gascoyne River (52 per cent) having more than half their inhabitants with no religious identification. The Victorian suburbs of Sherbrooke and Fitzroy North were also not far behind with 48 per cent and 46 per cent respectively.

The web page has a widget where you can enter in your postcode and get comparisons of the 2006 and 2011 Census results.

Not bad, OrphTown!

Tankerton has 28 families and 118 people. Not terribly statistically significant I would think. But it's good to see that there is one little godless place nearby. Not that I'd ever live there.

The article mentions Acton as having a high level of education.

Acton is the suburb that contains the Australian National University. There are literally no other residents.

According to wikipedia there are.
I believe that the 24 "private dwellings" listed on the ABS site are all located on the ANU campus, and are occupied by ANU staff.

I could be wrong, but it doesn't change my statement that Acton is a university area so it's not news to report that it has a relatively high rate of education.

Interestingly, the Herald Sun article mentions Mitchell as also having a high education rate. This is especially interesting, since the ABS lists four people resident in Mitchell in 3 private dwellings - all female.

Mitchell is an industrial suburb, like Fyshwick and Hume. These are the only areas of Canberra where adult stores and legal brothels are permitted.

Also, I'd like to know how the Herald Sun got a figure like 86% out of four people.
