Anti-virus suggestions needed

Not a good move

No... so you can get over it

Oh, Brother! You are pathetic. Your responses are going progressively downhill with each (in your mind) retort. I'm done with you. Please feel free to have the last word. I won't be seeing your responses after this anyway, so it really doesn't matter.

BYE!

Anyway, whatever you do, don’t go with AVG.

AVG is the new Norton.

Last time I hit AVG's website (a few months ago), they were discontinuing the free version. On this trip to their site, I'm seeing stuff that wasn't there before, so apparently they've changed their minds.

Thanks for the info! Happily downloading AVG for install now.

I'd been using AVG for quite some time, but gave up around v7.5 when they announced they were dropping the free version (money can be a little tight around here). Now that that's changed, I'm back to using that one.

Anyway, since you clowns missed it, I pointed out above that AVG doesn’t so much detect threats as it tells you when you’re already infected by breaking.

Just to get this thread back on track in case any lurkers are interested at this point.

I am not a willing user of Mr Bill's Fine Products but do run one of them on my laptop.

It came with something that I couldn't manage to upgrade (even though I paid for it) when the original trial expired. I then loaded Norton(?) as it is provided free by my ISP but the machine slowed to a point it was unusable.

I'm currently using ESET Smart Security 4 from http://www.eset.com/ and have found that it appears to work and that has a very small footprint and, at what-ever-number of Euros it was, is worth the small number the full version costs.

YMMV & etc. ;)

They were only discontinuing v7.5. It was actually discontinued on 31st December last year when they stopped releasing definition updates for it. The free version of AVG8 had been available for some time by that date.

I use the free versions of Avira, Avast and AVG on various computers and find them all to be decent home-use products with the exception that I don't like the Link Scanner that comes with AVG and have uninstalled that component.

I suspect that some users dislike of AVG comes from a few nasty false positives towards the end of last year, one of which caused serious issues for some users.

OMFSM!

has stupid bickering and baiting happend in the Computers section?

Wonder and amazement.

Whatever.

Gentlemen, no fighting in the War Room.

Compared to what? Apps that constantly tie up resources? If so, so what?
Compared with apps most people are used to using for their anti-virus. Mcaffee, Norton, AVG, Avast. Ask Joe which one he'd rather use.

I sincerely suggest that this may well be a PEBKAC issue - with a solution literally at your fingertips

I'm talking about what clamwin does *by default*. I'm perfectly capable of fixing it, and did so within 8 nanoseconds (which is a personal record).

AVG never discontinued their free version.
They forced an upgrade a couple of times, starting with 7.5 for vista compatibility iirc, and they presented ads for the pay-for-version in a slightly larger font than the links to the free version.

I don't understand why people continue to say they don't offer a free version. It seems a common misconception, but I'm absolutely baffled as to why. In my last job, customers would come in and have the pay-for version or Norton installed on top and claim it was because AVG stopped being free. If I was faced with having to stick my credit card into the slot in the front of my computer (wait, that is how you do it, right?) I'd take a heartbeat to read what was on the screen in MASSIVE LETTERS first.

I don't buy the argument from popularity

However, if you have results from benchmarking tests that support your claim, then please do cite them

Please note:

I ain't pretending that I know that Clamwin is better...

Instead, its merely that I have observed what I think are significant improvements in performance on several machines that I have (ever so frustratingly and painstakingly slowly) uninstalled McAffee, Norton or AVG (not Avast) and installed ClamWin... and I acknowledge that this could simply be some naive confirmation bias on my part

Eh? I'm saying that most people who use AV are exposed to what's bundled with their machines. While Norton et al are dreadful pieces of software which slow your machine down and are basically useless, they at least finish their "complete scan" before the user dies of old age. Which is what the user sees - and is what the user responds to.

Personally, I'd consider using clam if I cared about needing an AV solution.

Argument from popularity, huh? Weird idea.

I used AVG until it changed, it became a whole resource centre including for spyware/adware. The it was a resource hog for many people. Also, I'm happy using my own spy doctors, idont like one complete one. So I switched to Avira and my partner tried Avast..and we are both happy. Avira has been great for me stopping the malicious scripts and redirectors that are hitting photo share sites recently like 4shared and photobucket.

So... why should I "ask Joe which one he'd rather use"?

"The trial anti-virus software on my new laptop expires in 2 days, and I need some advise on what to replace it with." is what I was basing that on.
