Seems like the king might be behind the coup. He's very popular in Thailand.

The deputy prime minister and the minister of defence has been placed under arrest by the military.

This is such a shame. Are we going to see another Buddhist military dictatorship in the area? (The other being Burma/Myanmar.)

I'm a little surprised we haven't seen newspaper headlines like:

It seems very little has changed outside of the palace and government buildings in Bangkok so far. The locals seem to care little about the coup, and even less about the PM since he was rather unpopular with many Thais. I do not think the farangs care at all, as long as the bars and other hot spots are still open.

The only thing I have noticed so far was a small group of armed but bored looking soldiers at one of the skytrain stations. The baht is still less than 40 to 1 for the dollar. I will be out late tonight to see if there are any restrictions on moving around late at night. So far it is fun as usual for my wife and I.
