Another Thai Coup?

wow

i would have thought Thaksin Shinawatra would have been too rich and powerful for this to happen.....

I wonder what's going on.

I hope it's not the Muslims....

Tanks are Army. The CNN reporter was saying they didn't know if this was an effort to restore democracy, or take it away.

Tanks are Army. .

lol i know :)

but i was assuming that it would be an army inspired coup - that seems to generally be how coups work.....

edit

here we go

An army-owned TV station is showing images of the royal family and songs linked in the past with military coups.

Mr Thaksin announced he had removed the chief of the army, Thai television reported.

The prime minister ordered troops not to "move illegally", Reuters quoted him as saying in a voice broadcast on Thai television .

it's always the army....

The deputy prime minister and the minister of defence has been placed under arrest by the military.

This is such a shame. Are we going to see another Buddhist military dictatorship in the area? (The other being Burma/Myanmar.)

ETA : Statement from the coup-makers.

There has been social division like never before. Each side has been trying to conquer another with all possible means and the situation tends to intensify with growing doubts on the administration amid widespread reported corruption.

State units and independent organisations have been politically meddled, not able to deliver their services as specified in the Constitution.

The administration is also usually bordering on "lest majest" actions against the revered King. Despite attempts from social units for compromises, there is no way to end the conflicts.

The revolution body thus needs to seize power. We have no intention to rule but to return the power to the people as soon as possible, to preserve peace and honour the King who is the most revered to all Thais.

Yeah, heard all that before!

Well, I was going to go to Thailand for my Thanksgiving break but I suppose I'll have to take a "wait and see" attitude on that now. Just my luck.

My wife and I are flying to Bangkok tonight. She is not really concerned about the coup at all, her mom and sister (in Thailand) are not concerned either. We will not be spending much time in BKK anyway, mostly in Phuket and Korat. I was in the Philippines back in 1986 a short while after Marcos fled the country, things did not seem to be bad outside of Manila back then.
